Varicocele
Hello Doctor, I received the Moderna vaccine last week and subsequently developed gastroenteritis (with watery diarrhea) two days later.
During work, I suddenly noticed some pain when touching my testicles.
As I became more anxious, I frequently checked the situation, and by the third day, I felt the pain more acutely, so I went to the hospital and consulted a urologist.
It was confirmed that I have mild left testicular varicocele, with slight hematuria in my urine and a 0.5 cm stone in my bladder.
There was also inflammation on the left side of the bladder, causing a painful sensation.
I underwent an ultrasound of the testicles and kidneys, as well as an abdominal X-ray.
I have been diligently drinking water, and the doctor indicated that aside from the small stone, increasing my water intake could help.
He also mentioned that this type of varicocele can only be treated surgically and prescribed me some pain relief medication, which I haven't taken since I'm not in pain.
I feel that just having pain relief doesn't address the underlying issue.
After seeing literature about successful treatments from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), I sought help from a TCM practitioner, Ma Guang, to discuss these issues.
I prefer not to undergo surgery and would like to use TCM for recovery, especially since I never had this problem before or noticed it until after the vaccination.
The TCM doctor prescribed me Xuefu Zhuyu Decoction, Ganlu Disinfectant Pill, Shaofu Zhuyu Decoction, and Huo Xiang Zhengqi Powder.
I would like to ask if this TCM treatment is appropriate, and whether I should wear supportive underwear to hold the testicles.
Additionally, do I need to abstain for a few days? As a male, I have physiological needs, and these issues have made me quite anxious.
I might have had varicocele before but only noticed it now, which has caused me stress, especially with concerns about my ability to exercise in the future.
I am unsure if seeking TCM treatment is the right approach and hope to recover.
Thank you, Doctor, for your attention to my lengthy message.

Please continue to monitor the situation.
If there is no improvement in the condition with medication treatment, or if new symptoms arise, it is recommended to return for a consultation with the original treating physician to discuss whether medication adjustments are necessary.
If you need to inquire about the combination of traditional and Western medicine, please feel free to make an appointment for an outpatient consultation.
Thank you.

Managing varicocele, particularly through the lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), can be a multifaceted approach that addresses both the physical symptoms and the underlying imbalances in the body. Varicocele, which is characterized by enlarged veins within the scrotum, can lead to discomfort and potential fertility issues. Your situation, compounded by recent health events such as receiving the Moderna vaccine and experiencing gastrointestinal distress, adds complexity to your condition.
Firstly, it's important to understand that TCM views health as a balance of various bodily systems and energies. The treatment for varicocele in TCM often involves herbal remedies, acupuncture, and lifestyle modifications aimed at improving blood circulation, reducing inflammation, and promoting overall vitality.
The herbal formulas prescribed to you—Xuefu Zhuyu Tang (Blood Mansion Removing Stasis Decoction), Ganlu Xiaodu Dan (Sweet Dew Detoxifying Pill), Shaofu Zhuuyu Tang (Lower Abdomen Removing Stasis Decoction), and Huo Xiang Zheng Qi San (Agastache Qi Correcting Powder)—are commonly used in TCM to address issues related to blood stasis and dampness, which are believed to contribute to varicocele.
1. Xuefu Zhuyu Tang is particularly effective for promoting blood circulation and alleviating pain. It is often used for conditions where blood stagnation is present, which can be relevant in your case.
2. Ganlu Xiaodu Dan is known for its detoxifying properties and can help in clearing heat and dampness, which may be beneficial given your recent gastrointestinal issues.
3. Shaofu Zhuuyu Tang focuses on invigorating blood flow in the lower abdomen, which is directly related to your condition.
4. Huo Xiang Zheng Qi San is traditionally used for digestive issues and can help in restoring balance after experiencing diarrhea.
Regarding your concern about wearing supportive underwear, it is indeed advisable to wear supportive undergarments to help alleviate discomfort associated with varicocele. This can provide physical support to the affected area and may help reduce pain.
As for the question of abstaining from sexual activity, it is generally recommended to avoid activities that may exacerbate discomfort or increase pressure in the pelvic area, especially during the initial stages of treatment. However, complete abstinence is not strictly necessary unless advised by your healthcare provider. It is essential to listen to your body and avoid any activities that cause pain or discomfort.
It's also worth noting that while TCM can provide supportive care and may help alleviate symptoms, it is not a substitute for conventional medical treatment, especially if surgical intervention is deemed necessary by your urologist. The decision to pursue surgery should be based on a thorough evaluation of your condition, including the severity of the varicocele and its impact on your health and quality of life.
In conclusion, seeking TCM treatment for varicocele can be a valid approach, particularly if you are looking for non-invasive options to manage your symptoms. However, it is crucial to maintain open communication with your healthcare providers, both in Western medicine and TCM, to ensure a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses all aspects of your health. Regular follow-ups and monitoring will be essential to assess the effectiveness of the TCM approach and to make informed decisions regarding any potential surgical options in the future.
