Dorsalis pedis artery pulse is prominent?
In the past two weeks, I have noticed a significant pulsation in the arteries on the dorsum of my right foot.
There is no numbness in my foot, and I haven't been standing or walking for long periods.
Most of the time, I can feel the continuous throbbing, which is somewhat concerning.
I would like to know what kind of issue this might be and whether I need to seek medical attention.
Thank you, doctor.

Dr. Jiang Junyi reply Neurology
Dear Miss BB,
You mentioned that "the artery on the dorsum of your right foot is noticeably pulsating." Have you compared the pulsations of the dorsalis pedis arteries on both sides? Generally, we should not be able to feel the pulsation of blood vessels; however, if the arteries in the lower limbs are suddenly compressed, it may be felt.
Your symptoms seem more like localized muscle twitching.
The causes of muscle twitching can involve not only the muscles and nerves but also some metabolic disorders such as thyroid dysfunction and sleep disorders.
Mild fasciculations can lead to anxiety, which in turn exacerbates the twitching, creating a cycle that further heightens the patient's panic and anxiety.
I recommend supplementing with B vitamins, vitamin E, vitamin C, beta-carotene, selenium, and zinc, as these may help reduce some muscle twitching.
If the area of twitching expands and is accompanied by weakness, it is advisable to seek medical attention.
It is important to rule out peripheral nerve compression issues.
Peripheral nerve examinations can typically be assisted by electrophysiological studies.
Nerve conduction studies assess the conduction velocity and waveform of large fiber nerves, while electromyography (EMG) evaluates the muscle response in the innervated areas.
I suggest you visit a neurology clinic for further evaluation.
Thank you for your inquiry, and feel free to discuss any related questions.
Wishing you good health and peace.

The prominent dorsalis pedis pulse you are experiencing in your right foot can be concerning, especially since it is accompanied by a noticeable throbbing sensation. The dorsalis pedis artery is a continuation of the anterior tibial artery and is responsible for supplying blood to the dorsum (top) of the foot. A prominent pulse in this area can be a normal finding, especially in individuals with low body fat or increased physical activity. However, when it becomes pronounced without any apparent reason, such as prolonged standing or walking, it may warrant further investigation.
Several factors could contribute to the prominence of the dorsalis pedis pulse. One possibility is increased blood flow due to heightened physical activity or exercise, which can cause the arteries to dilate and the pulse to become more palpable. Another consideration is the possibility of vascular abnormalities, such as arteriovenous fistulas or other vascular malformations, which can lead to increased blood flow and a more pronounced pulse. Additionally, conditions such as hyperthyroidism can increase metabolic activity and blood flow, potentially leading to a more prominent pulse.
While the absence of symptoms such as numbness, tingling, or pain is reassuring, it is essential to consider other potential underlying issues. For instance, if there is a change in the pulse quality, such as a weak or absent pulse, or if you experience any new symptoms like swelling, discoloration, or pain, it would be prudent to seek medical attention. These could indicate vascular insufficiency or other circulatory problems that may require intervention.
In general, if you are feeling concerned about the prominent pulse, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional. A thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly imaging studies, can help determine the cause of the prominent dorsalis pedis pulse. Your doctor may also assess for any signs of peripheral vascular disease, which can lead to complications if left untreated.
In summary, while a prominent dorsalis pedis pulse can be benign, especially in the absence of other symptoms, it is always best to err on the side of caution. If you have any doubts or if the sensation persists or worsens, seeking medical advice is the best course of action. Your healthcare provider can offer personalized guidance and reassurance based on a comprehensive assessment of your condition.
