Issues After Sweating
Hello Dr.
Cheng,
I would like to ask: I actually have quite developed sweat glands, and I sweat a lot when it's hot.
This also causes rashes on my body, acne on my face, and even odor under my armpits.
I use medicated soap to shower every day, but I still have rashes on my shoulders.
Additionally, my sweating causes yellow stains on my clothes, and I have to scrub them hard every time.
How can I resolve this (I do not want to use antiperspirants)?
Xiao Jie, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2003/08/14
Dr. Zheng Lizhen reply Dermatology
Hello! Scrubbing vigorously does not help with rashes; in fact, it can worsen the inflammation of the skin.
Using antiperspirants in conjunction with a physician's prescription is more effective than scrubbing.
Best wishes for health from Dr.

Dealing with sweat-related skin issues can be quite challenging, especially for individuals with hyperactive sweat glands. The symptoms you describe, such as body rashes, facial acne, and odor, are common among those who sweat excessively. Here are some tips and solutions to help manage these issues effectively.
Understanding Sweat-Related Skin Issues
Excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, can lead to various skin problems. When sweat accumulates on the skin, it can mix with bacteria, leading to body odor and skin irritations. Additionally, sweat can cause the skin to become more prone to rashes and acne, particularly in areas where sweat tends to pool, such as the shoulders and underarms.
Tips for Managing Sweat-Related Skin Issues
1. Gentle Cleansing: While it’s important to keep the skin clean, using harsh soaps or scrubbing too vigorously can irritate the skin and exacerbate rashes. Instead, opt for a mild, fragrance-free cleanser that won’t strip the skin of its natural oils. Look for products that contain soothing ingredients like aloe vera or chamomile.
2. Moisturizing: After cleansing, it’s crucial to apply a non-comedogenic moisturizer to help maintain the skin’s barrier. This can prevent dryness and irritation that may arise from excessive washing. Look for lightweight, oil-free moisturizers that won’t clog pores.
3. Clothing Choices: Wear loose-fitting, breathable fabrics such as cotton or moisture-wicking materials. These fabrics allow sweat to evaporate more easily and reduce the likelihood of skin irritation. Avoid tight clothing that can trap moisture and heat against the skin.
4. Regular Exfoliation: Incorporating gentle exfoliation into your skincare routine can help remove dead skin cells that may contribute to clogged pores and acne. Use a mild exfoliating scrub or a chemical exfoliant containing salicylic acid or glycolic acid, but be careful not to over-exfoliate, as this can lead to irritation.
5. Diet and Hydration: Staying hydrated can help regulate body temperature and may reduce the amount of sweat produced. Additionally, consider reducing spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol, as these can trigger sweating.
6. Consult a Dermatologist: If over-the-counter solutions aren’t effective, it may be beneficial to consult a dermatologist. They can prescribe topical treatments or medications that can help manage excessive sweating and its related skin issues. Options may include prescription-strength antiperspirants or treatments for acne and rashes.
7. Alternative Treatments: If you prefer not to use antiperspirants, consider natural remedies such as witch hazel or tea tree oil, which have astringent and antibacterial properties. However, always perform a patch test to ensure you don’t have an adverse reaction.
8. Avoiding Irritants: Be mindful of the products you use on your skin, including laundry detergents and fabric softeners, as these can sometimes cause irritation. Opt for hypoallergenic products whenever possible.
Conclusion
Managing sweat-related skin issues requires a multifaceted approach that includes proper cleansing, moisturizing, and lifestyle adjustments. By adopting gentle skincare practices and making informed choices about clothing and diet, you can significantly reduce the impact of excessive sweating on your skin. If problems persist, seeking professional advice from a dermatologist can provide tailored solutions to address your specific concerns. Remember, taking care of your skin is an ongoing process, and finding the right balance is key to maintaining healthy skin.
