Scalp itching issue?
It seems that for about a month now, my scalp hasn't had dandruff at first, but it has been very itchy without any redness or swelling.
Recently, after washing my hair, my scalp feels very dry, with patches that look like peeling skin, and it is still very itchy, but there is still no redness or swelling.
I would like to ask if it's okay to apply petroleum jelly on a dry scalp.
I'm not sure if this is related to hair dyeing or bleaching, as the itching started around that time.

You should consider scheduling a medical appointment.
Without actually seeing the lesion, it's impossible to determine the issue.
We need to examine it to understand what the problem is and how to address it.

More Info
Understanding an itchy scalp can be quite complex, as it can stem from various causes, each with its own set of symptoms and potential remedies. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing dryness and itchiness on your scalp without any redness or swelling, which can be indicative of several conditions.
Causes of Itchy Scalp
1. Dry Scalp: This is one of the most common causes of an itchy scalp. Environmental factors such as dry air, especially in winter, or excessive washing can strip the scalp of its natural oils, leading to dryness and itchiness.
2. Dandruff: While you mentioned that you initially did not have flakes, dandruff can develop over time. It is often caused by a yeast-like fungus called Malassezia, which can irritate the scalp and lead to flaking and itching.
3. Allergic Reactions: If you have recently dyed or bleached your hair, it is possible that you are experiencing an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the hair dye. This can cause irritation and itchiness.
4. Seborrheic Dermatitis: This is a more severe form of dandruff that can cause red, flaky patches on the scalp. It may not always present with redness, especially in its mild form.
5. Psoriasis: This is a chronic autoimmune condition that can affect the scalp, leading to red patches covered with thick, silvery scales. It is less common but can be a cause of severe itchiness.
6. Eczema: Atopic dermatitis can also affect the scalp, leading to dryness and itchiness. This condition is often associated with other allergic conditions like asthma or hay fever.
Symptoms
The symptoms you are experiencing—itchiness, dryness, and flaking—are common across several conditions. The absence of redness or swelling may suggest that it is not an inflammatory condition, but it is essential to monitor for any changes.
Remedies
1. Moisturizing Treatments: Applying a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer or oil (like coconut oil or jojoba oil) can help alleviate dryness. While Vaseline (petroleum jelly) can provide moisture, it may be too heavy for the scalp and could lead to buildup. It’s best to use lighter oils or specialized scalp treatments.
2. Medicated Shampoos: Over-the-counter shampoos containing ingredients like ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, or zinc pyrithione can help manage dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis.
3. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that your hair dye or other hair products are causing irritation, consider switching to hypoallergenic or natural products.
4. Limit Washing: Washing your hair too frequently can strip the scalp of its natural oils. Try to reduce the frequency of washing and use a gentle shampoo.
5. Consult a Dermatologist: If your symptoms persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist. They can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend treatments tailored to your specific condition.
Conclusion
In summary, an itchy scalp can be caused by various factors, including dryness, allergic reactions, and skin conditions. While home remedies and over-the-counter treatments may provide relief, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms and seek professional advice if necessary. If you suspect that your symptoms are related to hair dye or other products, consider discontinuing their use and consulting a healthcare provider for further evaluation and treatment options.
