Facial issues
Hello, Doctor.
Around October last year, I noticed a bump on my forehead.
I went to see a dermatologist, and the doctor said it felt hard, so it wasn't within their scope.
I then visited a neurologist, who also said it wasn't really their specialty.
Previously, pressing on it would cause some pain, but recently, if I lean on the table, it hurts, and even light touches can be painful.
Sometimes, I experience sudden sharp pain, and my eyebrow on the same side occasionally feels sore.
I would like to ask what this condition might be.
Thank you.

1.
If there is a mass that persists and does not resolve for more than 2 weeks, surgical removal should be considered.
2.
It could potentially be a lipoma, sebaceous cyst, osteochondroma, among others.
3.
You can consult with a plastic surgery outpatient clinic.

Understanding forehead bumps can be a source of concern, especially when they are accompanied by pain or discomfort. Based on your description, it seems that you have a hard bump on your forehead that has been present since October of last year. You have seen both a dermatologist and a neurologist, but neither could provide a definitive diagnosis. The bump is painful when pressed, and you occasionally experience sharp pain and a sensation of heaviness in the eyebrow area on the same side.
There are several potential causes for a hard bump on the forehead, and understanding these can help you determine the next steps for evaluation and treatment.
1. Sebaceous Cyst: These are common and usually benign. They occur when a hair follicle becomes blocked, leading to a buildup of keratin. They can feel firm and may become painful if they become inflamed or infected.
2. Lipoma: A lipoma is a benign tumor made of fat tissue. They are typically soft and movable under the skin, but some may feel firmer. They are generally painless unless they press on nearby nerves.
3. Osteoma: This is a benign bone growth that can occur on the skull. Osteomas are usually hard and can be asymptomatic, but if they grow large enough, they may cause discomfort or pain.
4. Dermatofibroma: This is a benign growth that can feel firm and may be tender to the touch. They are often brownish in color and can occur anywhere on the skin.
5. Trauma or Injury: If you have had any recent injuries to the forehead, a bump could be a result of a hematoma or a localized swelling due to trauma.
6. Infection: Infections such as cellulitis or abscesses can cause localized swelling and pain. If the bump is red, warm, or has any discharge, this could be a sign of infection.
Given your symptoms of pain upon pressure and occasional sharp pain, it is essential to seek further evaluation. Here are some recommendations on when to seek help:
- Persistent Symptoms: If the bump continues to grow, becomes increasingly painful, or does not improve over time, it is crucial to consult a healthcare provider.
- Neurological Symptoms: If you experience any neurological symptoms such as headaches, vision changes, or any other unusual sensations, you should seek immediate medical attention.
- Changes in Appearance: If the bump changes in color, becomes red or warm, or starts to drain fluid, these could be signs of infection or other complications.
- Consultation with a Specialist: If you have not already, consider seeing a specialist such as an otolaryngologist (ENT) or a neurosurgeon, especially if the bump is causing significant discomfort or if there are concerns about its nature.
In conclusion, while many forehead bumps are benign, your symptoms warrant further investigation. It is essential to communicate your concerns clearly with your healthcare provider and advocate for the appropriate imaging studies (like an ultrasound or CT scan) or biopsies if necessary. Early diagnosis and treatment can help alleviate discomfort and address any underlying issues effectively.
