Dental Crown Lengthening: Is It Covered by Insurance? - Dentistry

Crown lengthening surgery

Is there insurance coverage for crown lengthening surgery? After having my lower left wisdom tooth extracted, I have a cavity next to the second molar that extends below the gum line.
The dentist said that I need to undergo crown lengthening surgery in order to proceed with root canal treatment.
However, I have contacted several clinics and they all stated that crown lengthening surgery is out-of-pocket.
I saw on a website that someone mentioned Hsinchu Hospital has insurance coverage for this procedure.
I would like to know where I can have this surgery done with insurance coverage, or if there is a phone number I can call to inquire about which hospitals provide insurance coverage for this type of surgery.
Thank you.

Stanley, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/05/24

Dr. Lin Jiayong reply Dentistry

Hello: It is recommended that you seek a physician you trust, rather than making decisions based solely on price, as you may need assistance in case of postoperative issues.
It is safest to have the procedure done at a medical center.
(Crown lengthening procedures are typically out-of-pocket expenses, and anything under 10,000 NTD is considered reasonable.) Sincerely, Lin Chia-Yung, Department of Dentistry, Taichung Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Dental crown lengthening is a procedure often required when a tooth has extensive decay or damage below the gum line, making it difficult to restore the tooth with a crown. This procedure involves reshaping the gum tissue and, in some cases, the underlying bone to expose more of the tooth structure. It is essential for ensuring that there is enough tooth structure above the gum line to support a crown or other restorative work.

Regarding insurance coverage, the situation can vary significantly depending on the specific insurance plan and the healthcare provider. In the United States, dental insurance typically covers a portion of restorative procedures, but coverage for crown lengthening can be more complex. Many insurance plans may not cover crown lengthening if it is deemed a cosmetic procedure rather than a necessary one. However, if the procedure is required to facilitate a necessary treatment, such as root canal therapy, there may be a better chance of obtaining coverage.

To determine whether your specific procedure is covered by insurance, you should take the following steps:
1. Contact Your Insurance Provider: Call the customer service number on your insurance card and ask about coverage for dental crown lengthening. Be sure to provide them with details about your situation, including the reason for the procedure and any related treatments.

2. Consult with Your Dentist: Your dentist's office can often assist in verifying insurance coverage. They may have experience with similar cases and can help you understand what documentation or codes are necessary for insurance claims.

3. Check Local Dental Clinics: As you mentioned, some clinics or hospitals, like the one in Hsinchu, may offer this procedure under insurance coverage. It would be beneficial to call local dental clinics or hospitals directly to inquire about their policies regarding insurance coverage for crown lengthening.

4. Documentation: If your dentist believes that the procedure is medically necessary, they may provide documentation or a letter of medical necessity that can help in getting the procedure covered by insurance.

5. Appeal if Necessary: If your insurance initially denies coverage, you have the right to appeal the decision. Your dentist can assist with this process by providing additional information or documentation to support the necessity of the procedure.

In summary, while some dental insurance plans may cover crown lengthening, it is crucial to verify your specific plan's details. The best approach is to communicate directly with your insurance provider and your dental care team to navigate the coverage options effectively. If you find that your insurance does not cover the procedure, ask your dentist about payment plans or financing options that may be available to help manage the costs.
