After illness, the size of erections may decrease?
Hello, I started home isolation in early May due to a confirmed case in my household.
Initially, I experienced bronchitis, and shortly after, I tested positive with a rapid test.
After 11 days, my symptoms have mostly resolved, leaving me with occasional coughs with sputum (sometimes light yellow).
However, I have recently noticed a significant decrease in the size of my penis (both length and girth), and I have almost no morning erections.
My libido and stamina have also decreased, and my erections have changed from a normal red color to a pale hue.
I have heard that the COVID-19 virus may affect sexual function, and I am very concerned about potential long-term effects.
Should I seek medical attention immediately, or could this be due to the antibiotics and other medications I have been taking that might be affecting my body’s functions?

Post-Illness Erectile Changes: Should You Be Concerned?
Hello, thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding the changes you have experienced in your erectile function following your illness. It’s understandable to feel anxious about these changes, especially given the context of your recent health issues and the information circulating about the potential effects of COVID-19 on sexual health.
Firstly, it’s important to acknowledge that various factors can contribute to erectile dysfunction (ED) or changes in sexual function after an illness. In your case, you mentioned experiencing bronchitis and a positive COVID-19 test, followed by a recovery period where you still have some lingering symptoms like occasional cough and phlegm. While many people recover from COVID-19 without long-term effects, there is emerging evidence suggesting that some individuals may experience sexual health issues post-infection.
The changes you described—such as a perceived decrease in size, lack of morning erections, reduced libido, and changes in the quality of your erections—can be distressing. These symptoms may be influenced by several factors:
1. Physical Health: Illness can lead to physical deconditioning, which may affect blood flow and hormone levels, both of which are crucial for erectile function. If you were less active during your illness, this could contribute to changes in your sexual health.
2. Psychological Factors: The stress and anxiety associated with being ill, especially with a virus like COVID-19, can also impact libido and erectile function. Mental health plays a significant role in sexual health, and feelings of worry or depression can lead to decreased sexual desire and performance.
3. Medication Effects: If you were prescribed antibiotics or other medications during your illness, it’s possible that these could have side effects that impact sexual function. Some medications can lead to changes in libido or erectile quality.
4. Hormonal Changes: Illness can sometimes lead to temporary hormonal imbalances, which may affect sexual function. For instance, testosterone levels can fluctuate due to stress, illness, or changes in physical activity.
Given these factors, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional, particularly a urologist or your primary care physician, to discuss your symptoms in detail. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, blood tests to check hormone levels, and possibly other diagnostic tests to rule out any underlying conditions.
In the meantime, consider the following steps to support your sexual health:
- Stay Active: Engage in regular physical activity as tolerated. Exercise can improve blood flow, boost mood, and enhance overall health, which may positively impact erectile function.
- Manage Stress: Practice stress-reduction techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, or yoga. These can help alleviate anxiety and improve your mental well-being.
- Healthy Lifestyle Choices: Maintain a balanced diet, stay hydrated, and avoid excessive alcohol or tobacco use, as these can all affect sexual health.
- Open Communication: If you have a partner, communicate openly about your feelings and experiences. This can help reduce anxiety and foster intimacy.
In conclusion, while it’s understandable to be concerned about these changes, many factors can contribute to erectile dysfunction after an illness. Consulting with a healthcare provider will help clarify the situation and guide you toward appropriate treatment options if necessary. Remember, you are not alone in this, and seeking help is a positive step toward recovery.
