Chest issues

I am unmarried and have not engaged in sexual activity.
Recently, I experienced itching in one breast (unilateral), while the other side was completely unaffected.
It has now started to break the skin, form scabs, and produce yellow discharge that stains my bra.
The nipple on the affected side is also slightly larger than the other side.
What should I do? What medication should I apply to improve this condition? What could be causing this issue? P.S.
I am physically active.

Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/05/29

This type of itching is likely related to eczema, so it would be advisable to consult a dermatologist for an examination.

More Info

It sounds like you're experiencing a concerning issue with your breast, particularly with symptoms like itching, skin breakdown, crusting, and yellow discharge. Given that you mentioned these symptoms are unilateral (affecting one breast more than the other), it's important to approach this situation with care and seek appropriate medical advice.

The symptoms you're describing could be indicative of several conditions. One possibility is a skin infection, such as folliculitis or an abscess, which can occur when hair follicles become inflamed or infected. This could lead to the yellow discharge you mentioned. Another possibility is eczema or dermatitis, which can cause itching and skin changes, including crusting and discharge. In some cases, conditions like Paget's disease of the nipple, which is a rare form of breast cancer, can also present with similar symptoms, particularly if there is persistent irritation or discharge.

Here are some steps you can take to manage your symptoms and seek appropriate care:
1. Maintain Hygiene: Ensure that the affected area is kept clean and dry. Use mild soap and water to gently cleanse the area, and avoid harsh soaps or scrubs that could further irritate the skin.

2. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that your clothing or detergent might be irritating your skin, consider switching to hypoallergenic products. Avoid tight-fitting bras that may cause friction.

3. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream may help reduce inflammation and itching if the issue is related to dermatitis. However, if there is an infection, topical antibiotics may be necessary, which would require a prescription from a healthcare provider.

4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the symptoms. If the discharge continues, increases in volume, or if you notice any additional symptoms such as fever, increased redness, or swelling, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.

5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given the symptoms you've described, especially the presence of discharge and skin changes, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider, such as a dermatologist or a breast specialist. They can perform a thorough examination and may recommend tests, such as a culture of the discharge or imaging studies, to determine the underlying cause.

6. Avoid Self-Diagnosis: While it can be tempting to search for answers online, self-diagnosing can lead to unnecessary anxiety and potentially delay appropriate treatment. It's best to rely on professional medical advice.

In conclusion, while some breast skin issues can be benign and related to irritation or dermatitis, the presence of discharge and skin breakdown warrants a professional evaluation to rule out any serious conditions. Early intervention can lead to better outcomes, so don't hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for guidance.
