After testing negative for COVID-19, should I continue taking traditional Chinese medicine?

Hello, doctor.
I was previously diagnosed with COVID-19, and my Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor prescribed a formula similar to Qing-Guo.
However, after 7 days, my rapid test turned negative, but I have not finished even half of the herbal medicine (because I didn't receive the medication right away).
Since the Qing-Guo formula is relatively cooling, I believe the similar formula is as well, and I have a sensitive gastrointestinal system that is prone to diarrhea.
Should I continue taking it? Thank you.

Dr. Lü Bingcheng reply Traditional Chinese Medicine

It is personally recommended to temporarily discontinue the use of the previous traditional Chinese medicine, as its properties may be too cooling.
Additionally, it is advised to consult with a licensed traditional Chinese medicine practitioner for a detailed examination and to obtain a prescription for herbal remedies that are currently suitable for your condition.

When it comes to the continuation of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) after testing negative for a condition, it is essential to consider several factors, including the nature of the medication, the patient's overall health, and any specific symptoms they may be experiencing. In your case, you mentioned that you were prescribed a TCM formula similar to Qingguan, which is known for its cooling properties. Since you have a sensitive gastrointestinal system that is prone to diarrhea, it is prudent to evaluate whether continuing this treatment is appropriate for you.

Firstly, it is important to understand that TCM operates on a different paradigm than Western medicine. TCM focuses on balancing the body's energies (Qi), and the herbal formulas are tailored to the individual's specific condition and constitution. If you have tested negative for the illness for which you were being treated, it may indicate that your body has successfully fought off the infection. However, the decision to continue or discontinue TCM should ideally be made in consultation with your TCM practitioner, who can assess your current state and adjust your treatment accordingly.

Given that you have experienced gastrointestinal sensitivity, continuing a formula that is known to be "cold" may not be advisable. In TCM, excessive cold can lead to digestive issues, especially in individuals who are already predisposed to such problems. If you are experiencing any discomfort or adverse effects from the medication, it is wise to stop taking it and consult your TCM practitioner for alternative options that may be more suitable for your constitution.

Moreover, if you have not completed the prescribed course of medication, it is essential to communicate with your healthcare provider about your concerns. They may suggest a modified approach or a different formula that aligns better with your current health status. It is also worth noting that TCM practitioners often emphasize the importance of individualized treatment, so your feedback about your symptoms and reactions to the medication will be crucial in guiding their recommendations.

In summary, while it is possible to discontinue TCM after testing negative, it is advisable to do so under the guidance of your TCM practitioner, especially considering your gastrointestinal sensitivity. They can provide you with tailored advice and possibly recommend alternative treatments that will support your recovery without exacerbating your digestive issues. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare providers, whether they practice Western or traditional medicine, to ensure that you receive the most appropriate care for your health needs.
