Severe pain in the nasal cavity, inner ear, and maxilla?
Hello doctor, I would like to ask about an issue I occasionally experience.
In the middle of the night, I suddenly have severe pain in my nasal cavity that feels like a stabbing sensation.
This is followed by intense pain in my throat and inner ear, also resembling a stabbing feeling.
Sometimes, the pain in my upper jaw triggers the pain in my inner ear.
How can I resolve this issue? Thank you for your response.

Hello: If the pain persists, it is recommended to visit a neurologist for examination.
In case of acute episodes, you may use analgesics to manage the symptoms.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
Severe pain in the nasal cavity, throat, and ears can be quite distressing and may stem from various underlying conditions. Based on the symptoms you've described, it is essential to consider several potential causes and appropriate solutions.
Possible Causes
1. Sinusitis: Inflammation of the sinuses can lead to severe pain in the nasal cavity and can radiate to the throat and ears. This condition often results from infections, allergies, or structural issues in the nasal passages. Symptoms may include nasal congestion, facial pain, and sometimes fever.
2. Nasal Polyps: These are non-cancerous growths in the nasal passages that can cause blockage and lead to pain. They can also contribute to sinusitis, exacerbating the pain.
3. Tonsillitis or Pharyngitis: Inflammation of the tonsils or throat can cause severe pain that may radiate to the ears. This is often due to viral or bacterial infections.
4. Ear Infections: Middle ear infections (otitis media) can cause referred pain to the throat and nasal cavity. Symptoms may include ear pain, fever, and sometimes drainage from the ear.
5. Dental Issues: Problems with the upper teeth, such as abscesses or impacted wisdom teeth, can cause referred pain to the upper jaw, nasal cavity, and ears.
6. Trigeminal Neuralgia: This condition involves sudden, severe facial pain that can be triggered by various stimuli. It may cause sharp pain in the nasal area and can sometimes affect the throat and ears.
Solutions and Recommendations
1. Consult a Specialist: Given the complexity of your symptoms, it is advisable to consult an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, including nasal endoscopy and imaging studies (like a CT scan), to determine the underlying cause.
2. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage acute pain. However, it is crucial to follow the recommended dosages and consult a healthcare provider if pain persists.
3. Nasal Irrigation: Using saline nasal sprays or performing nasal irrigation can help clear mucus and relieve pressure in the nasal passages, which may alleviate some pain.
4. Antibiotics: If a bacterial infection is diagnosed, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection effectively.
5. Allergy Management: If allergies are contributing to your symptoms, antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids may be beneficial. Identifying and avoiding allergens can also help.
6. Dental Evaluation: If dental issues are suspected, a visit to a dentist is warranted to rule out any dental infections or problems that may be causing referred pain.
7. Follow-up Care: If your symptoms do not improve with initial treatment, follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider are essential to reassess your condition and adjust treatment as necessary.
Conclusion
Severe pain in the nasal cavity, throat, and ears can arise from various causes, including infections, structural issues, and dental problems. It is crucial to seek professional medical advice to accurately diagnose the underlying issue and receive appropriate treatment. Early intervention can prevent complications and improve your quality of life. Remember, self-diagnosis and treatment can sometimes lead to further complications, so consulting a healthcare professional is always the best course of action.
