Rectal bleeding
Recently, I have been experiencing rectal bleeding after bowel movements.
The blood is bright red, and initially, the first few stools are normal without any blood.
Towards the end, there is dripping blood.
During bowel movements, there is occasionally a bit of pain, but it usually results in a significant amount of blood.
The toilet paper often has a small amount of bright red blood, resembling thick mucus, or there are some stools mixed with blood.

When it comes to the presence of bright red blood in stool, it is essential to understand that this symptom can arise from various causes, some of which may require immediate medical attention. The bright red color of the blood typically indicates that the bleeding is occurring in the lower gastrointestinal tract, such as the rectum or anus, rather than higher up in the digestive system, where the blood would likely appear darker.
One of the most common causes of bright red blood in stool is hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in the rectal area that can become inflamed and bleed, especially during bowel movements. This bleeding is often painless, but it can be accompanied by discomfort or itching. Another potential cause is anal fissures, which are small tears in the lining of the anus that can occur due to passing hard stools. These fissures can cause sharp pain and bleeding during bowel movements.
Diverticular disease is another condition that can lead to bright red blood in the stool. Diverticula are small pouches that can form in the walls of the colon, and if they become inflamed or infected (a condition known as diverticulitis), they can bleed. This bleeding can be significant and may require medical intervention.
In some cases, the presence of bright red blood can indicate more serious conditions, such as colorectal polyps or colorectal cancer. Polyps are growths on the lining of the colon that can bleed, and while not all polyps are cancerous, some can develop into cancer over time. Colorectal cancer itself can present with symptoms such as changes in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, and persistent abdominal discomfort, in addition to rectal bleeding.
Given your description of the bleeding occurring towards the end of bowel movements, along with the presence of blood mixed with stool and on toilet paper, it is crucial to seek medical evaluation. A healthcare provider may recommend a thorough examination, which could include a digital rectal exam, colonoscopy, or other imaging studies to determine the source of the bleeding.
It is also important to consider other factors that may contribute to gastrointestinal bleeding, such as dietary habits, the use of certain medications (like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), and underlying health conditions (such as liver disease or clotting disorders).
In summary, while there are several benign causes of bright red blood in stool, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Early intervention can be crucial, especially if the bleeding is due to a more serious underlying condition. Do not hesitate to seek medical attention, especially if you experience additional symptoms such as significant pain, changes in bowel habits, or if the bleeding persists.
