Can a stye (hordeolum) be treated with Visine?

Due to my family member currently being in quarantine, it is inconvenient to visit an ophthalmology clinic.
Today, a blister appeared on the lower eyelid (likely a stye), and there is some redness and swelling around it.
Therefore, I went to the pharmacy to buy eye drops for my family member and showed the pharmacist a photo of the eye condition.
The pharmacist suggested purchasing Visine eye drops, but after researching online, it seems that Visine is more targeted towards symptoms of acute conjunctivitis.
I am unsure if it would be effective in improving the early stages of a stye, so I would like to seek the doctor's advice first.
Thank you very much!

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Hello, Ms.
Mao: According to the information, the components of Lismore are as follows: Dexamethasone Phosphate (Sodium) and Neomycin (Sulfate) are permissible to use.
If there is no improvement, it is still necessary to visit an ophthalmologist for examination upon the lifting of restrictions.

Lissamine Green eye drops are primarily used as a diagnostic tool in ophthalmology to assess the health of the cornea and conjunctiva. They help in identifying areas of damage or dryness in the eye by staining those areas, making them visible under a slit lamp. However, when it comes to treating styes (hordeola), Lissamine Green is not specifically indicated for this condition.

A stye is an infection of the oil glands in the eyelid, often caused by bacteria, leading to a red, swollen bump that can be painful. The typical treatment for a stye includes warm compresses applied to the affected area several times a day to help reduce swelling and promote drainage. Over-the-counter pain relievers may also be used to alleviate discomfort. In some cases, if the stye does not improve or worsens, a healthcare provider may prescribe antibiotic ointments or, in more severe cases, may need to drain the stye.

While Lissamine Green may not directly treat a stye, it can be beneficial in assessing the overall health of the eye and ensuring that there are no other underlying issues, such as conjunctivitis, that may complicate the situation. If your family member is experiencing redness and swelling around the eye, it is essential to monitor the symptoms closely. If the stye does not improve with home care, or if there are signs of spreading infection (such as increased redness, fever, or vision changes), it is crucial to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

In the absence of a doctor's visit, using Lissamine Green eye drops may provide some insight into the eye's condition, but it should not replace proper treatment for the stye. Additionally, if your family member is experiencing discomfort or other symptoms, it is advisable to avoid using contact lenses until the issue is resolved, as this can exacerbate irritation and potentially lead to further complications.

In summary, while Lissamine Green eye drops can be useful for diagnostic purposes, they are not a treatment for styes. The best course of action for managing a stye at home includes warm compresses and monitoring the situation closely. If symptoms persist or worsen, seeking professional medical advice is essential for appropriate treatment.
