Scar Treatment: Should You Use Scar Cream or Beauty Tape? - Plastic Surgery

Wound healing and the issue of scar reduction with cosmetic tape?

I had a car accident recently and received 7 stitches near my left eye.
I had 5 out of 6 stitches removed and have been using silicone tape since then.
The wound now appears pink and feels firm to the touch.
I would like to know if I can start applying scar cream now, or if I should continue using the silicone tape.
Should I apply the scar cream while still using the tape, or can I apply it directly without the tape? Thank you.

Hello: After applying the ointment, wait for it to dry before applying the beauty patch.
If you have any questions, please consult at the outpatient clinic.

When it comes to scar treatment, the choice between using scar cream and beauty tape can depend on several factors, including the stage of healing, the type of scar, and personal preferences. In your case, since you have recently had stitches removed from a wound near your left eye, it's essential to approach the treatment carefully to ensure optimal healing and minimize scarring.

Firstly, the fact that your scar is currently pink and feels firm is a normal part of the healing process. Scars often go through various stages, starting from a red or pink appearance, which indicates increased blood flow to the area as the body works to heal. Over time, the scar may become lighter and softer. The firmness you are feeling is due to collagen buildup, which is a natural part of scar formation.

Regarding the use of scar cream, it is generally advisable to wait until the wound has fully healed before applying any topical treatments. Since you mentioned that your stitches have been removed, you should ensure that the skin is intact and not open or weeping. If the area is fully healed and there are no signs of infection, you can start applying a scar cream. These creams often contain ingredients like silicone, which can help flatten and soften scars, or other active ingredients that promote skin regeneration.

As for beauty tape, it is often used to help flatten and soften scars as well, particularly in the early stages of healing. If you have been using beauty tape and it has been effective for you, you might consider continuing its use for a while longer, especially if it provides a protective barrier and helps keep the scar moisturized.
If you decide to use both beauty tape and scar cream, it is generally recommended to apply the scar cream first, allowing it to absorb into the skin, and then cover it with beauty tape. However, you should avoid using both simultaneously if the scar cream contains active ingredients that may not be compatible with the adhesive in the tape.
In summary, here are some steps you can consider:
1. Assess Healing: Ensure that the scar is fully healed and there are no open wounds or signs of infection before applying any creams.

2. Start with Scar Cream: If the area is healed, you can start applying a scar cream. Look for products that contain silicone or other scar-reducing ingredients.

3. Continue Using Beauty Tape: If you find that the beauty tape is beneficial, you can continue using it, especially if it helps keep the area protected and moisturized.

4. Consult a Dermatologist: If you are unsure about the healing process or the best treatment options, it is always a good idea to consult with a dermatologist. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation and skin type.

5. Monitor Changes: Keep an eye on how your scar responds to the treatments. If you notice any adverse reactions or if the scar does not improve, seek professional advice.

In conclusion, both scar creams and beauty tape can be effective in managing scars, but the choice will depend on your individual healing process and preferences. Always prioritize the health of your skin and consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns.

Hello Dr. Lu: I would like to ask which is better for surgical scars, beauty gel or silicone tape, in order to make them less noticeable. Thank you.

Dr. Lu Daokuan reply Plastic Surgery
Beauty gels provide tension to the wound, making it less likely for scars to widen, while silicone adds compressive force. Silicone is more effective but is less convenient to use and tends to be more expensive.

Beauty tape. The ointment should be made of silicone oil (as a substitute for silicone sheets). Once the ointment is applied, it won't adhere properly.

It mainly depends on the area affected. If it is a joint, it is recommended to use ointments or gels rather than adhesive patches, as they may not adhere well.
