For mild cases, is taking Qingguan No. 1 for only three days sufficient?
My boyfriend tested positive on the evening of May 28 (Saturday) using a rapid test, but the traditional Chinese medicine clinic for video consultations was closed on weekends.
By the time he had his video consultation on May 30 (Monday), he was already on the second day of his confirmed diagnosis.
He took his first packet of Qingguan that evening.
The TCM doctor prescribed only three days' worth of Qingguan and instructed him to take one packet three times a day.
However, I had previously seen online that the treatment should last for 5 to 10 days, and I am concerned that three days may not be sufficient for my boyfriend.
Currently, after completing the three-day course, his symptoms have improved significantly, but he still occasionally has phlegm and a dry cough.
Therefore, I would like to ask for your opinion, doctor: is three days of treatment enough, or should he continue taking it as long as he still has symptoms? Thank you for your response.

When it comes to managing mild COVID-19 symptoms, the duration and dosage of treatment can vary based on individual circumstances and the specific treatment being used. In your boyfriend's case, he started taking Qingguan after testing positive for COVID-19, and he has been on it for three days. It's understandable to be concerned about whether this duration is sufficient, especially given the varying recommendations you may have encountered online.
Qingguan, or Qingguan decoction, is a traditional Chinese medicine that has been used to treat respiratory infections, including COVID-19. The treatment duration can depend on the severity of the symptoms and the patient's overall health. While some sources suggest a treatment course of 5 to 10 days, others may recommend shorter durations for mild cases, especially if symptoms are improving.
In your boyfriend's situation, since he has already experienced significant improvement in his symptoms after three days of treatment, it may indicate that the medication has been effective for him. However, the presence of lingering symptoms such as phlegm and dry cough suggests that he may still be in the recovery phase. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is often advised to continue treatment until the symptoms have completely resolved, as this can help ensure a full recovery and reduce the risk of potential complications or relapses.
It is also important to consider that while Qingguan can help alleviate symptoms, it is not a substitute for monitoring overall health and seeking further medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen. If your boyfriend continues to experience symptoms after completing the three-day course, it would be prudent to consult with a healthcare professional. They may recommend extending the treatment or exploring additional therapies to address the remaining symptoms.
Moreover, it's essential to keep in mind that COVID-19 can affect individuals differently, and recovery timelines can vary. Some people may experience lingering symptoms for weeks after the initial infection, a phenomenon often referred to as "long COVID." Therefore, if your boyfriend's symptoms do not resolve or if he develops new symptoms, he should seek further evaluation.
In summary, while three days of Qingguan may be sufficient for some individuals with mild COVID-19 symptoms, it is crucial to listen to the body and continue treatment as needed, especially if symptoms persist. Consulting with a healthcare provider for personalized advice is always a good approach, ensuring that he receives the most appropriate care based on his specific situation.
