Issues Following Root Canal Treatment on the Second Molars?
Currently, my second molar (the last one) has just undergone root canal treatment twice.
The doctor said it was cleaned out and temporarily sealed for observation.
He suggested that I first have my upper and lower right wisdom teeth extracted, then rest for a week before returning for suture removal and possibly filling or making a crown.
My first question is, since both upper and lower right wisdom teeth are horizontally impacted, will having both extracted at once affect my work and daily life? Previously, I had one horizontally impacted wisdom tooth removed from the upper left side, which was exposed, and I recovered in about a day.
My second question is, under what circumstances is it unnecessary to make a crown for a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment? My personal preference is for the tooth to be durable and strong, and I am not concerned about the cost.
Is it the case that the doctor recommends placing a crown on any tooth that has had a root canal?
My third question, and I apologize if this seems disrespectful to the profession, is based on a video a friend shared with me.
It stated that it is not advisable to place a crown within six months after wisdom tooth extraction due to slight tooth movement that can occur, leading to issues like enlarged gaps and bite problems.
However, my previous dental clinic indicated that it would be fine to proceed with the crown just a week after extraction.
I would like to seek additional professional advice on this matter.
Thank you for the platform and thank you to the doctor.

Hello: 1.
If there are concerns, you can ask the dentist to perform the extractions in two separate sessions; it is not necessary to extract both teeth in one treatment.
2.
and 3.
Root canal treatment involves removing the tooth's natural structure, and in most cases, the lost structure is restored with a prosthetic restoration.
If you really do not want to get dentures, you can inform the dentist directly, or observing for a period of time before making a decision is also an option.

Post-root canal care is crucial for ensuring the longevity and health of your treated tooth, especially when considering additional procedures like wisdom teeth removal and the placement of crowns. Let's address your questions one by one.
1. Impact of Wisdom Teeth Removal on Daily Life
Removing both upper and lower wisdom teeth simultaneously, especially when they are horizontally impacted, can indeed have an impact on your daily activities. Generally, patients experience swelling, discomfort, and sometimes bruising after the procedure. Recovery time can vary, but many people find that they can return to normal activities within a few days. However, since you mentioned that you had a previous experience with a wisdom tooth extraction that allowed you to recover in about a day, it’s possible that your recovery might be similar this time, but it’s essential to prepare for the possibility of needing more time, especially if both teeth are being removed at once.
To minimize disruption to your work and life, consider scheduling the extraction during a time when you can afford to take it easy for a few days. Follow your dentist's post-operative care instructions closely, including managing pain and swelling with prescribed medications and ice packs, and sticking to a soft food diet.
2. Crown Recommendations After Root Canal Treatment
Regarding the necessity of a crown after root canal treatment, it is generally recommended to place a crown on a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy. This is because the tooth can become brittle and more susceptible to fracture after the nerve has been removed. The crown serves to protect the tooth from further damage and helps restore its function.
While some teeth may not require a crown if they are minimally damaged and located in areas that do not bear significant chewing forces, the consensus among dental professionals is that placing a crown is a safer option for most teeth that have had root canal treatment. If your dentist has advised you to get a crown, it is likely because they believe it will provide the best long-term outcome for your tooth.
3. Timing of Crown Placement After Wisdom Teeth Removal
Your concern about the timing of crown placement after wisdom teeth removal is valid. The idea that teeth may shift after an extraction is true; however, the extent of this movement can vary. In general, it is often recommended to wait a few weeks to a few months after wisdom teeth removal before placing a crown on another tooth, especially if the extraction site is still healing.
Your dentist's advice to proceed with the crown placement a week after wisdom teeth removal may be based on their assessment of your specific situation. If they believe that the extraction won't significantly affect the alignment of your other teeth, it may be safe to proceed. However, if you have concerns, it is always a good idea to seek a second opinion or discuss your worries with your dentist to ensure you are comfortable with the plan.
Conclusion
In summary, while you may be able to manage the recovery from wisdom teeth removal and proceed with crown placement relatively quickly, it is essential to follow your dentist's recommendations and listen to your body. If you experience significant discomfort or complications, don't hesitate to reach out for further evaluation. Your dental health is paramount, and ensuring that you have a comprehensive plan in place will help you maintain a healthy smile for years to come. Always prioritize open communication with your dental care provider to address any concerns you may have throughout this process.
