Drug side effects

Hello Doctor, two years ago I started treatment for panic disorder with Liyou, but after taking the medication, I felt even more panic, so I switched medications.
Eventually, I was on long-term treatment with Lexapro, and my condition improved, allowing me to stop the medication.
Recently, some symptoms returned, and I went back to the psychosomatic department to resume Lexapro.
However, after taking it, I started waking up very early the next day, accompanied by rapid heart rate, strong palpitations, anxiety, and sweating hands.
Could this be a side effect of the medication? How can I cope with this daily discomfort? Thank you for your patient response.

Hello: Based on your description in the letter, you have a history of panic disorder.
You were taking Lexapro and had previously discontinued it due to improvement in your condition.
Recently, you have resumed taking Lexapro due to fluctuations in your symptoms, and you are experiencing early awakening, palpitations, anxiety, and sweating, which raises concerns about potential side effects of the medication.
It is completely normal to be concerned about medication side effects, and with the assistance of a physician, a gradual and gentle adjustment of the medication should yield positive results.
Panic disorder is a common condition in modern society, and most patients experience significant improvement in their symptoms and quality of life with regular medical treatment.
I recommend that you consult with a psychiatrist to discuss your concerns and adjust your medication during regular follow-up visits.
Thank you for your letter.
Thank you.

More Info

Hello! It sounds like you're experiencing some challenging side effects from your medication, and I appreciate your willingness to seek clarity on this matter. Let's break down your concerns regarding the medication, particularly focusing on the side effects associated with anxiety treatments like Lexapro (Escitalopram), which you mentioned as "樂復得."

Understanding Medication Side Effects
Lexapro is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) commonly prescribed for anxiety and depression. While many patients find relief from their symptoms, it is not uncommon for some individuals to experience side effects, especially when starting or adjusting the dosage of the medication. The symptoms you described—waking up early, increased heart rate, anxiety, and sweating—can indeed be associated with SSRIs, particularly during the initial phase of treatment or when the dosage is modified.

#
Common Side Effects of Lexapro:
1. Insomnia or Sleep Disturbances: Many patients report changes in their sleep patterns, including insomnia or waking up earlier than usual. This can be exacerbated by anxiety itself, creating a cycle of discomfort.

2. Increased Heart Rate: Some individuals may experience palpitations or a racing heart, particularly when starting the medication. This can be distressing and may feel like an anxiety attack.

3. Sweating: Increased sweating, especially in the palms or underarms, is another potential side effect of SSRIs. This can be uncomfortable and may contribute to feelings of anxiety.

4. Anxiety Symptoms: Paradoxically, some patients may feel heightened anxiety when beginning treatment with SSRIs. This can be due to the body adjusting to the medication.

Managing Side Effects
1. Consult Your Doctor: It's crucial to communicate with your prescribing physician about the side effects you're experiencing. They may consider adjusting your dosage or switching you to a different medication that may be better tolerated.

2. Gradual Adjustment: If you’ve recently restarted Lexapro, your body may need time to adjust. Sometimes, side effects diminish after a few weeks as your body acclimates to the medication.

3. Lifestyle Modifications: Incorporating relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, yoga, or mindfulness meditation can help manage anxiety symptoms and improve sleep quality.

4. Sleep Hygiene: Establishing a calming bedtime routine, limiting screen time before bed, and creating a comfortable sleep environment can help improve sleep disturbances.

5. Avoid Stimulants: Reducing or eliminating caffeine and nicotine can help manage anxiety and heart rate issues.

6. Support System: Engaging with a therapist or support group can provide additional coping strategies and emotional support during this time.

Conclusion
While it’s understandable to feel concerned about the side effects of your medication, it’s important to remember that many patients experience these symptoms temporarily. Open communication with your healthcare provider is key to finding the right treatment plan that minimizes side effects while effectively managing your anxiety. If the symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to reach out for further evaluation and support. Your mental health is paramount, and there are various options available to help you navigate this journey. Thank you for sharing your experience, and I wish you the best in your treatment and recovery!
