Your Bowel Issues: Signs of Potential Colon Cancer? - Gastroenterology and Hepatology

I would like to inquire about my bowel issues?

Hello Doctor: I would like to ask about my bowel movements.
I often have normal stools one day, then diarrhea the next, or I might pass a normal stool followed by diarrhea.
Sometimes, I also notice a thin stool that sticks to the toilet bowl.
Could this be a sign of colorectal cancer? If it were colorectal cancer, would the shape of the stool constantly change, such as having diarrhea in the morning, normal stools in the afternoon, and constipation the next day? Or would it only switch between constipation and diarrhea without fluctuating back and forth? Since I started observing my stools, I've noticed that sometimes after I finish, the water in the toilet bowl appears reddish.
It doesn't look exactly red, nor does it look brown.
If it were blood in the stool, would the blood be on the stool itself, or would it settle at the bottom of the toilet bowl? I've seen the water appear somewhat reddish for quite some time, and I'm quite worried, so I wanted to consult with you, Doctor.

It is just irritable bowel syndrome, but I am still concerned about checking for occult blood in the stool.

When it comes to bowel issues, especially concerning symptoms that may indicate colon cancer, it's important to approach the situation with a clear understanding of the signs and potential causes. Your description of experiencing alternating patterns of normal bowel movements, diarrhea, and occasionally passing thin stools can indeed be concerning, but it does not automatically indicate colon cancer.

Colon cancer can present with a variety of symptoms, and while changes in bowel habits are one of them, they are not exclusive to cancer. Conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), infections, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or even dietary changes can lead to similar symptoms. The fluctuation between normal stools, diarrhea, and constipation can often be attributed to functional gastrointestinal disorders like IBS, which is characterized by a combination of abdominal pain and altered bowel habits.

Regarding your specific questions about the nature of bowel movements and the presence of blood, it’s important to clarify a few points:
1. Variability of Stool Consistency: It is possible for stool consistency to vary from day to day. You may experience normal stools one day and diarrhea the next, or even alternating between constipation and diarrhea. This variability can occur in conditions like IBS, where stress, diet, and other factors play significant roles.

2. Presence of Blood: If you notice red or reddish-brown water in the toilet bowl after a bowel movement, it is crucial to determine whether this is indeed blood. Blood in the stool can appear as bright red streaks on the surface of the stool or can mix with the stool, giving it a darker appearance. If blood is present, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly, as this can indicate various conditions, including hemorrhoids, diverticular disease, or more serious issues like colon cancer.

3. Symptoms of Colon Cancer: While colon cancer can cause changes in bowel habits, it often presents with additional symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, persistent abdominal discomfort, or changes in the consistency and shape of the stool (e.g., pencil-thin stools). If you are experiencing these symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation.

4. When to Seek Medical Advice: Given your concerns and the symptoms you are experiencing, it would be prudent to consult a gastroenterologist. They may recommend tests such as a colonoscopy to evaluate the health of your colon and rule out any serious conditions, including cancer. Early detection is key in managing any potential issues effectively.

In summary, while your symptoms may be concerning, they do not definitively indicate colon cancer. However, due to the variability in your bowel habits and the presence of potential blood, it is essential to seek medical advice to ensure a thorough evaluation and appropriate management. Taking proactive steps in addressing your gastrointestinal health is crucial, especially if you are experiencing significant changes or discomfort.
