After taking emergency contraception, there may be some discharge, and the menstrual period has not arrived?

Hello doctor, my menstrual period last month was from May 13 to May 18, which has been normal for the past few months.
On June 7, my boyfriend ejaculated inside me, and on June 8, I took an emergency contraceptive pill.
On June 9, he ejaculated inside me again, and after researching online, I found that I should take another pill, so I took one on June 10.
Today is June 16, and my period still hasn't arrived, but I have noticed thick, dark brown discharge that resembles cervical mucus, which is not continuously present.
Is this pathological or physiological? How many days until my period is expected? What is the likelihood of pregnancy in this situation?

Wendy, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/06/16

Regarding your concerns, the limited information available does not allow us to determine whether your menstrual cycle is a standard 28-day cycle.
Therefore, it is difficult to ascertain when your period will occur.
Taking emergency contraception may also cause irregularities in your expected menstrual cycle.
If you have concerns, it is advisable to take a home pregnancy test or consult a healthcare professional for confirmation.
Thank you for your inquiry, and I wish you health and happiness.

Hello! Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing some post-pill symptoms after taking emergency contraception. Let's break down your concerns regarding your delayed period and the discharge you mentioned.

Firstly, it’s important to understand that emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs), such as the one you took, can cause various side effects, including changes in your menstrual cycle. After taking ECPs, it is common for women to experience a delay in their period, as well as changes in the flow and consistency of menstrual discharge. The deep brown, thick discharge you described could be old blood, which is not uncommon when your menstrual cycle is disrupted.

Regarding your menstrual cycle, it typically takes some time for your body to adjust after taking emergency contraception. While some women may experience their period within a week or so after taking the pill, others may find that their period is delayed by several days or even weeks. Since you took the emergency contraceptive pill shortly after unprotected intercourse, it is possible that your body is still adjusting.
As for the likelihood of pregnancy, while ECPs are effective at preventing pregnancy when taken as directed, no contraceptive method is 100% effective. If your period does not arrive within a week or so of when you expect it, it would be wise to take a home pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy. If the test is negative and your period still does not come, you may want to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In terms of the discharge you are experiencing, if it is not accompanied by any unusual symptoms such as a strong odor, itching, or irritation, it is likely a normal physiological response to the hormonal changes induced by the emergency contraceptive. However, if you notice any concerning symptoms, it would be best to seek medical advice.

In summary, the delay in your period and the discharge you are experiencing can be attributed to the hormonal effects of the emergency contraceptive pill. It is advisable to monitor your symptoms and consider taking a pregnancy test if your period does not arrive soon. If you have any further concerns or if your symptoms change, please reach out to a healthcare provider for personalized advice and support.

Remember, it's always best to consult with a healthcare professional for any medical concerns, especially when it comes to reproductive health. They can provide you with the most accurate information and guidance tailored to your specific situation.
