More than a month after hemorrhoid surgery, there is still discharge?
Hello doctor, I underwent a tissue coagulation device mixed hemorrhoid surgery on May 2nd, and it has been over a month since then.
During my follow-up appointment, the doctor mentioned that the wound has healed, but I still occasionally notice a small amount of yellow or yellow-brown discharge.
Sometimes it feels like a slight leakage of fecal matter that dries up, and other times it’s just yellowish.
Is this normal, or could there be an issue with my anus?

If there is still ongoing discharge for some time after surgery, it is necessary to differentiate whether it is a wound healing issue or the formation of a fistula.
It is recommended to keep the local wound clean, observe and record the discharge daily, and return to the original surgeon's clinic for evaluation as soon as possible.
If a fistula has formed, additional surgery may sometimes be required.

After undergoing a hemorrhoid surgery, particularly a procedure like the PPH (Procedure for Prolapse and Hemorrhoids), it is not uncommon for patients to experience some degree of discharge or secretion from the surgical site. The presence of yellow or yellow-brown discharge, especially if it is minimal and not accompanied by significant pain, fever, or other concerning symptoms, can often be considered a normal part of the healing process.
In the weeks following surgery, the body goes through various stages of healing, and it is typical for some fluid to be expelled as the tissues recover. This discharge may consist of serous fluid, which is a clear or slightly yellowish fluid that can occur as part of the inflammatory response. It may also include remnants of stool or mucus, particularly if the area is still sensitive or if there is minor leakage due to the surgical adjustments made during the procedure.
However, it is essential to differentiate between normal post-operative discharge and signs of potential complications. If the discharge is accompanied by a foul odor, increased pain, swelling, or fever, these could be indicators of an infection or other complications that would require medical attention. In such cases, it is crucial to consult your healthcare provider promptly.
Regarding the sensation of slight leakage or the feeling of moisture, this can also be a normal experience post-surgery. The surgical site may still be sensitive, and the body may be adjusting to the changes made during the procedure. It is advisable to maintain good hygiene in the area, using gentle cleansing methods and avoiding any harsh soaps or irritants that could exacerbate the situation.
If you have concerns about the nature of the discharge or if it persists beyond what is considered typical, it is always best to follow up with your surgeon or healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough examination to ensure that the healing process is proceeding as expected and rule out any complications.
In summary, while some discharge can be normal after hemorrhoid surgery, it is essential to monitor the situation closely. If you notice any concerning symptoms or if the discharge does not improve, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Your healthcare provider can offer reassurance and guidance tailored to your specific situation, ensuring that your recovery continues smoothly.
