Weakness in the calves?
Hello doctor, I experienced a sudden increase in blood pressure today, and I'm not sure why.
Sometimes my hands feel weak, and I have a tingling sensation in the thumb area of my palm.
I also feel weakness in my calves, and at times my legs feel weak, either both or just one.
I don't have any issues with facial drooping or slurred speech, but I do have headaches and stiffness in my neck and shoulders.
It shouldn't be a minor stroke, right? After all, I have no problems walking.
What could be the issue?
Xun, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/06/20
Dr. Hong Weibin reply Neurology
Hello: Based on your description, it seems difficult to pinpoint a specific neurological disorder.
If daily activities, including walking, exercising, and self-care, are not problematic, it may be due to psychosocial stress or environmental factors.
It would be advisable to continue monitoring the situation.

It sounds like you're experiencing a concerning combination of symptoms, including weakness and numbness in your limbs, particularly in your hands and legs, along with headaches and neck stiffness. While I cannot provide a diagnosis, I can help you understand some potential causes and considerations based on your symptoms.
Firstly, the weakness and numbness in your hands, especially in the thumb area, could be indicative of a condition known as carpal tunnel syndrome. This occurs when the median nerve, which runs from your forearm into the palm of your hand, becomes compressed at the wrist. Symptoms often include tingling, numbness, and weakness in the hand, particularly affecting the thumb, index, and middle fingers. If you spend a lot of time typing or using your hands in repetitive motions, this could be a contributing factor.
The weakness in your legs, particularly if it is intermittent, could be related to several factors. One possibility is peripheral neuropathy, which can result from various causes, including diabetes, vitamin deficiencies (especially B12), or even certain medications. This condition affects the peripheral nerves and can lead to sensations of numbness, tingling, or weakness in the limbs.
Another potential cause of your symptoms could be related to cervical spine issues. Given that you mentioned neck stiffness and headaches, it’s possible that there may be some compression or irritation of the nerves in your neck, which can lead to symptoms radiating down into your arms and legs. Conditions such as cervical radiculopathy occur when a nerve in the neck is compressed or irritated, leading to pain, weakness, or numbness in the arms.
Additionally, your symptoms could be related to tension or stress, which can lead to muscle tightness and discomfort in the neck and shoulders, potentially contributing to headaches and a feeling of weakness in the limbs. Stress can also exacerbate existing conditions, making symptoms feel more pronounced.
While you mentioned that you do not have facial drooping or slurred speech, which are common signs of a stroke, it is still important to take your symptoms seriously. Headaches, especially if they are new or different from what you have experienced before, should not be overlooked. If you have any sudden changes in your symptoms, such as increased weakness, difficulty walking, or changes in vision, you should seek immediate medical attention.
Given the complexity of your symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional who can perform a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly imaging studies or nerve conduction tests. This will help determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and guide appropriate treatment.
In the meantime, consider keeping a symptom diary to track when your symptoms occur, their duration, and any potential triggers. This information can be invaluable for your healthcare provider in diagnosing and managing your condition.
In summary, while there are several potential causes for your symptoms, including carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, cervical spine issues, or stress-related tension, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional for a comprehensive evaluation and tailored treatment plan. Your health and well-being are paramount, and addressing these symptoms early can lead to better outcomes.
