Concerns After Circumcision~
Hello, Doctor.
I had a circumcision on August 4th, and I have two questions for you, Dr.
Liu.
1.
Now that it's almost a month later, I have adapted to the sensitivity of the glans, but the area around the urethral opening is still quite sensitive when it rubs against my underwear.
I enjoy playing baseball, and I'm worried that during intense movements while playing, I might injure the urethral opening or that it might swell up like it did right after the circumcision.
2.
After my circumcision, the glans experienced peeling.
Today, I noticed that the peeling has mostly resolved, but there is still a patch on the far right side of the glans, near the frenulum, that is peeling.
There is no discharge or bleeding, but it looks unusual.
I'm concerned it might be something serious like cancer.
Previously, that area appeared slightly raised, but it was not very noticeable.
I asked the doctor to check it during my follow-up for the circumcision, and he said it looked completely normal.
However, that was before the peeling occurred, and I just noticed it today.
Could this be penile cancer? What symptoms are associated with penile cancer? I'm only 19 years old and really don't want to face such a serious issue.
Xiao Wei, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2003/08/30

Post-circumcision sensitivity and skin issues are common concerns for many individuals who have undergone the procedure. It’s important to address these concerns with accurate information and reassurance.
1. Sensitivity at the Urethral Opening: After circumcision, it is not unusual for the glans (the head of the penis) and the urethral opening to be sensitive. This sensitivity can persist for several weeks to months as the skin adjusts to being exposed. The friction from clothing, especially during physical activities like baseball, can exacerbate this sensitivity. To minimize discomfort, consider wearing supportive underwear that reduces friction and provides cushioning. If you are concerned about potential injury during vigorous activities, it may be wise to take precautions, such as wearing protective athletic gear, to shield the area from impact.
2. Peeling Skin on the Glans: The peeling of the skin on the glans is typically a part of the healing process after circumcision. The skin is adjusting to its new environment, and it may shed layers as it heals. The fact that you have noticed some peeling near the frenulum (the band of tissue on the underside of the penis) is not uncommon. If there is no discharge, bleeding, or significant pain, it is likely a normal part of healing. However, it’s crucial to monitor the area for any changes. If the peeling persists or if you notice any unusual symptoms, such as persistent redness, swelling, or discharge, it would be prudent to consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
3. Concerns About Cancer: It’s understandable to be concerned about serious conditions like penile cancer, especially when noticing changes in the skin. Penile cancer is rare, particularly in young individuals like yourself. Common symptoms of penile cancer may include a growth or sore on the penis that does not heal, changes in the color or texture of the skin, or unusual discharge. However, the symptoms you describe do not align with typical signs of cancer, especially since your doctor has previously assessed the area and deemed it normal. If you continue to have concerns, it is always best to seek a second opinion or follow up with your healthcare provider for peace of mind.
4. General Advice: After circumcision, maintaining proper hygiene is essential. Gently clean the area with mild soap and water, and avoid irritants such as harsh soaps or lotions. If you experience persistent sensitivity or discomfort, over-the-counter topical treatments may help, but consult your doctor before using any new products.
In summary, while sensitivity and skin changes post-circumcision can be concerning, they are often part of the normal healing process. If you have ongoing concerns or if symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for personalized advice and reassurance. Your health and comfort are paramount, and it’s important to address any worries you may have with a qualified provider.
