Duration of dizziness in cerebral hemorrhage?
Hello Doctor, my mother was in a car accident on June 17th in the afternoon.
She suffered a direct impact to her head, and after an emergency CT scan, it was found that she had slight intracranial hemorrhage.
After evaluation by the emergency physician, surgery was deemed unnecessary.
The next day, although she experienced dizziness and memory lapses, her consciousness was clear enough for her to be discharged.
After several days of resting at home, her memory issues persist, and her dizziness has not improved.
Sometimes when I ask her, she says she feels even more dizzy than a few days ago.
I understand that her recent memory problems may affect her reliability in communication, but I would like to know if it is normal for her to feel increasingly dizzy.
How long does it typically take for dizziness to resolve? Thank you.
Jenny, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/06/22

Increasing dizziness is abnormal.
Generally, dizziness can alleviate within 1-2 weeks.

After a brain hemorrhage, particularly one caused by trauma such as a car accident, it is not uncommon for patients to experience dizziness and cognitive issues, including memory problems. Your mother's situation, where she is experiencing persistent dizziness and memory lapses following her accident, raises several important considerations.
Firstly, the dizziness she is experiencing may be attributed to several factors related to her brain injury. When a brain hemorrhage occurs, it can lead to increased intracranial pressure, which may affect balance and spatial orientation, resulting in dizziness. Additionally, the brain's ability to process information can be compromised, leading to confusion and memory issues. These symptoms can sometimes worsen before they improve, especially in the days and weeks following the initial injury.
In terms of duration, the timeline for recovery from dizziness after a brain hemorrhage can vary significantly from person to person. Some individuals may start to feel better within a few days, while others may experience symptoms for weeks or even months. Factors that can influence recovery include the severity of the hemorrhage, the individual's overall health, age, and any pre-existing conditions.
It is also essential to consider that if your mother's dizziness is worsening, this could indicate a potential complication. For instance, there may be ongoing bleeding, swelling, or other issues that require medical attention. It is crucial to monitor her symptoms closely. If her dizziness continues to increase or if she develops new symptoms such as severe headaches, nausea, vomiting, or changes in consciousness, it is imperative to seek immediate medical evaluation.
In general, rehabilitation and follow-up care are vital after a brain hemorrhage. This may include physical therapy, occupational therapy, and cognitive rehabilitation to help address dizziness and memory issues. Healthcare providers may also recommend medications to manage symptoms and support recovery.
In conclusion, while some level of dizziness and cognitive impairment can be expected after a brain hemorrhage, worsening symptoms should not be overlooked. It is advisable to consult with her healthcare provider to assess her condition further and determine the best course of action. Regular follow-ups and open communication with her medical team will be crucial in ensuring her recovery and addressing any complications that may arise.
