Post-Diagnosis Urological Issues: When to Seek Medical Attention? - Urology

Post-diagnosis issues?

On the third day after testing positive, I experienced difficulty urinating after taking cold medication.
After consulting with a physician, I stopped taking two medications for nasal congestion.
Today is the sixth day, and I have started to feel some pain in my right testicle, especially after lying on my side, and I also have lower abdominal pain (which occurs during urination as well).
My urination is also delayed, taking a while before I can urinate.
Should I seek medical attention for this situation, considering I am still in isolation?

Bo, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/06/22

Hello: If the skin of the scrotum becomes red or if the testicles gradually swell, you should seek medical attention.
Otherwise, drink plenty of water; the effects of medication typically subside in 2-3 days.
Wishing you good health.

It sounds like you're experiencing a concerning set of symptoms following your diagnosis and medication use. Given the details you've provided, it is important to address your situation carefully.

Firstly, the symptoms you're describing—difficulty urinating, pain in the right testicle, and lower abdominal pain—are significant and warrant medical attention. While it’s understandable that you may be hesitant to seek care during a period of isolation, your health should be the priority. Here are some considerations:
1. Pain and Urinary Issues: The combination of testicular pain and urinary difficulties can indicate several potential issues, including infections (such as epididymitis or urinary tract infections), or other conditions that may require prompt evaluation. Testicular pain, especially if it is acute or worsening, should not be ignored, as it can sometimes be associated with serious conditions like testicular torsion, which is a surgical emergency.

2. Medication Side Effects: You mentioned that you started experiencing these symptoms after taking cold medication. Some over-the-counter medications can cause urinary retention or difficulty urinating as a side effect. If you have already stopped taking the medication and the symptoms persist, it is crucial to seek medical advice.

3. Isolation Considerations: If you are currently in isolation due to a contagious illness, it is still important to communicate with your healthcare provider. Many healthcare facilities offer telehealth services, which can allow you to discuss your symptoms without needing to leave your isolation space. This can help determine whether you need an in-person visit.

4. When to Seek Immediate Care: If you experience severe pain, swelling in the testicle, fever, or if your urinary symptoms worsen (such as not being able to urinate at all), you should seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of a more serious condition that requires urgent care.

5. Follow-Up: Given your recent diagnosis and the new symptoms, it would be wise to follow up with your urologist or primary care physician as soon as possible. They can provide a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, urinalysis, and possibly imaging studies to determine the cause of your symptoms.

In summary, while it is understandable to be cautious during isolation, your symptoms are concerning enough that you should seek medical attention. Whether through a telehealth appointment or an in-person visit, getting evaluated by a healthcare professional is essential to ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly and appropriately. Your health and well-being should always come first, and timely intervention can often lead to better outcomes.
