Calculate the date of conception?
Doctor, my menstrual cycle has only been recorded since February, with three cycles of 29, 37, and 31 days respectively.
The first day of my last menstrual period was on May 17.
On June 20, I took a morning pregnancy test that showed two very dark lines, and later that evening at the clinic, the test was also positive.
However, the doctor said they couldn't see anything yet and advised me to return on June 27 for a follow-up, suggesting that it might be too early to confirm.
I had unprotected intercourse with my boyfriend on May 5 and May 12.
Could either of those dates be the reason for my positive test?
Xuan, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/06/22

More Info
Understanding your conception date can be a complex process, especially when considering the variability of menstrual cycles and the timing of ovulation. Based on the information you've provided, let's break down the factors that influence conception and how to estimate your conception date accurately.
Menstrual Cycle Overview
A typical menstrual cycle ranges from 21 to 35 days, with an average of about 28 days. However, as you've noted, your cycles have varied in length: 29, 37, and 31 days. This variability is not uncommon and can be influenced by numerous factors, including stress, hormonal changes, and lifestyle factors.
Ovulation and Fertility Window
Ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before the start of your next menstrual period. For example, if your cycle is 29 days long, ovulation would likely occur around day 15 (29 - 14 = 15). If your cycle is 37 days, ovulation might occur around day 23. The days leading up to and including ovulation are considered your "fertile window," where conception is most likely to occur.
In your case, if your last menstrual period (LMP) started on May 17, and assuming a cycle length of around 31 days, ovulation would likely have occurred around June 1. The days leading up to ovulation (May 29 to June 1) would be your most fertile days.
Conception Date Estimation
You mentioned having unprotected intercourse on May 5 and May 12. Given the timing of your cycle, it is unlikely that conception occurred on these dates, as they precede your estimated ovulation window. The most likely dates for conception would be around June 1, following your LMP on May 17.
Pregnancy Testing and Confirmation
You indicated that you received a positive pregnancy test on June 20. At this point, you would be approximately 4 weeks pregnant, which aligns with the timing of your ovulation and potential conception. However, your doctor suggested waiting until June 27 for further confirmation, likely due to the need for a more definitive ultrasound to visualize the pregnancy.
Important Considerations
1. Cycle Variability: It's essential to keep in mind that cycle lengths can vary, and ovulation can occur earlier or later than expected. Tracking your cycle over several months can help you better understand your patterns.
2. Pregnancy Tests: Home pregnancy tests are generally accurate, but testing too early can lead to false negatives. If you receive a positive result, follow up with your healthcare provider for confirmation.
3. Health and Wellness: If you have concerns about your menstrual cycle or fertility, consider consulting a healthcare provider or a fertility specialist. They can provide personalized insights and recommendations based on your health history.
4. Safe Practices: If you are sexually active and not planning for pregnancy, consider discussing contraceptive options with your partner and healthcare provider to prevent unintended pregnancies.
In conclusion, based on your cycle lengths and the timing of your intercourse, it is most likely that conception occurred around June 1, following your last menstrual period. For further clarity and confirmation, follow up with your healthcare provider as advised.
