Stomach discomfort, digestion?
Hello Doctor, I've been experiencing some stomach discomfort lately.
I had a snack two to three hours before bed yesterday, and around eleven o'clock I started feeling unwell.
I took a nap and woke up around one, and my stomach has been gurgling and I've been burping with a food taste.
My stomach feels a bit bloated, and drinking water helps relieve the discomfort.
Is this indigestion and bloating, or could it be an issue with stomach acid? Is it okay to take antacids? Thank you, Doctor.

More Info
Stomach discomfort can be a common issue, and it often raises questions about whether the underlying cause is related to indigestion or excess stomach acid. Based on your description, it seems that you experienced discomfort after eating a snack close to bedtime, which is a common trigger for digestive issues. The symptoms you mentioned, such as gurgling sounds in your stomach, belching with food taste, and a feeling of heaviness or pressure in your stomach, can indeed be indicative of either indigestion or acid-related problems.
Indigestion, or dyspepsia, is characterized by discomfort in the upper abdomen and can include symptoms such as bloating, belching, and nausea. It often occurs after eating, especially if the meal is large, fatty, or spicy. Eating close to bedtime can exacerbate these symptoms because lying down can hinder the digestive process and increase the likelihood of acid reflux, where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing discomfort and a sour taste in the mouth.
On the other hand, excess stomach acid can lead to conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or peptic ulcers. Symptoms of excess acid may include heartburn, a burning sensation in the chest or throat, and a sour taste in the mouth. The fact that drinking water provides some relief suggests that your discomfort might be related to acid irritation, as water can temporarily dilute stomach acid and alleviate the burning sensation.
Given your symptoms, it would be reasonable to consider both indigestion and acid-related issues as potential causes. Over-the-counter antacids or medications that reduce stomach acid, such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or H2 blockers, may provide relief. However, it's essential to use these medications as directed and not rely on them long-term without consulting a healthcare professional.
If your symptoms persist, worsen, or are accompanied by other concerning signs such as weight loss, difficulty swallowing, or persistent vomiting, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider may recommend diagnostic tests, such as an upper endoscopy, to evaluate the condition of your stomach and esophagus and rule out any serious underlying issues.
In summary, your symptoms could be due to either indigestion or excess stomach acid. While over-the-counter medications may help alleviate your discomfort, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and consult a healthcare professional if they persist or worsen. Maintaining a healthy diet, avoiding late-night snacks, and managing stress can also contribute to better digestive health.
