Knee arthroscopy surgery
Hello, Doctor: Due to a car accident on August 30 of last year, I initially did not experience any pain in my knee.
However, around the evening of September 7, after being discharged, I suddenly felt sharp pain.
I consulted many doctors and underwent numerous examinations before finally deciding to have surgery.
The surgery date was June 22 of this month, during which I underwent arthroscopy on both knees.
The doctor mentioned that my left patella had dislocated, and he repositioned it, using electrocautery.
For my right knee, there was cartilage damage, but the doctor said it was not severe and only cleaned the surrounding area.
I was hospitalized for four days and was discharged yesterday.
However, I noticed that my knee makes a popping sound when I move it, although there is no pain.
Is this normal? Thank you, Doctor.

In normal circumstances, cartilage injuries need to be monitored continuously because they are subject to ongoing degeneration.

After undergoing knee arthroscopy, it is common for patients to experience various sensations, including popping or clicking sounds in the knee joint. This phenomenon can be concerning, especially after surgery, but it is essential to understand the underlying reasons and whether it is a cause for concern.
Firstly, the popping sound you are experiencing may be attributed to several factors. One possibility is the movement of the patella (kneecap) over the femur (thigh bone) as you bend or straighten your knee. If the patella was realigned during surgery, it may take some time for the surrounding soft tissues, such as ligaments and tendons, to adjust to the new positioning. This adjustment can lead to audible sounds as the structures move over one another.
Another reason for the popping could be related to the presence of air bubbles in the synovial fluid of the joint. When you move your knee, these bubbles can burst, producing a popping sound. This is generally harmless and does not indicate any underlying problem.
Additionally, if the surgery involved cleaning up damaged cartilage or other soft tissues, the knee may have some residual swelling or inflammation. This can lead to a sensation of tightness or instability, which might also contribute to the popping sounds. As the knee heals and inflammation decreases, these sounds may diminish.
However, it is crucial to monitor the situation closely. If the popping is accompanied by pain, swelling, or a feeling of instability, it could indicate an issue that requires further evaluation. In such cases, it is advisable to consult your orthopedic surgeon or physical therapist to assess the knee's condition and determine if any additional interventions are necessary.
Regarding your recovery, it is essential to follow your surgeon's post-operative instructions carefully. Engaging in a structured rehabilitation program can help strengthen the muscles around the knee, improve stability, and enhance overall function. Physical therapy may include exercises to increase range of motion, strengthen the quadriceps and hamstrings, and improve balance and proprioception.
In summary, experiencing popping sounds in the knee after arthroscopy can be normal, especially if there is no accompanying pain or swelling. However, it is vital to remain vigilant and consult your healthcare provider if you notice any concerning symptoms. With proper rehabilitation and monitoring, most patients can expect a successful recovery and return to their normal activities.
