Gastrointestinal discomfort?
Hello doctor, I have been experiencing the following symptoms for almost three weeks: 1.
Nausea 2.
Loss of appetite 3.
Bloating 4.
Indigestion with audible bowel sounds 5.
Relief after belching 6.
No vomiting or diarrhea 7.
Stools appear dark but are yellow-brown upon wiping 8.
Weight loss of 3-4 kg due to reduced food intake.
These symptoms started after a night of staying up late, which I have not experienced before.
They improved slightly a week ago, but worsened again after eating fried food.
I am really worried.
Currently, I am receiving treatment from a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner.
Is there a possibility of stomach cancer? Thank you, doctor.

Understanding gastrointestinal discomfort can be quite challenging, especially when symptoms persist for an extended period. Based on the symptoms you've described—nausea, loss of appetite, bloating, indigestion, and changes in bowel movements—it's understandable that you're feeling concerned about the possibility of a serious condition like gastric cancer.
Firstly, let's break down your symptoms. Nausea and loss of appetite can often be linked to various gastrointestinal issues, including gastritis, peptic ulcers, or even functional gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The fact that your symptoms began after a period of stress and poor sleep could suggest that they are related to lifestyle factors, including diet and stress management.
Bloating and the sensation of gurgling in your stomach are common signs of indigestion, which can occur when the digestive system is not functioning optimally. This can be exacerbated by consuming fried or fatty foods, which are harder to digest and can lead to increased gas production. The relief you feel after burping indicates that gas buildup may be contributing to your discomfort.
Regarding your bowel movements, the observation of dark stools can be concerning, as it may indicate the presence of blood or other issues in the gastrointestinal tract. However, the fact that you describe the wiping as yellow-brown suggests that the stool itself may not be indicative of bleeding. It's essential to consider other factors, such as dietary changes, which can also affect stool color.
Weight loss of 3-4 kg due to decreased appetite is another factor to consider. Unintentional weight loss can be a red flag in the context of gastrointestinal symptoms, but it is crucial to evaluate it alongside other symptoms and medical history.
While your symptoms are concerning, it is important to note that the likelihood of gastric cancer, especially in someone without a significant family history of the disease or other risk factors, is relatively low. Gastric cancer typically presents with more severe symptoms, such as persistent vomiting, significant weight loss, and severe abdominal pain. However, it is still essential to rule out any serious conditions through appropriate medical evaluation.
Since you are currently undergoing treatment with traditional Chinese medicine, it may be beneficial to also consult with a gastroenterologist for a comprehensive evaluation. They may recommend diagnostic tests such as an endoscopy or imaging studies to assess the condition of your stomach and intestines more thoroughly. These tests can help identify any underlying issues, such as gastritis, ulcers, or other abnormalities.
In the meantime, consider making dietary adjustments to ease your symptoms. Eating smaller, more frequent meals, avoiding fried and spicy foods, and incorporating more fiber into your diet can help improve digestion. Staying hydrated and managing stress through relaxation techniques or moderate exercise can also be beneficial.
In summary, while your symptoms warrant attention and further investigation, the likelihood of gastric cancer is low, especially given the nature of your symptoms and their onset. It is crucial to seek a thorough evaluation from a healthcare professional who can provide a tailored approach to your treatment and address your concerns effectively. Your health is important, and taking proactive steps to understand and manage your symptoms is a positive move forward.
