Are you pregnant?

Hello doctor, my girlfriend's menstrual cycle used to be about 23 to 25 days.
The first day of her last period was on June 1.
Recently, we had unprotected sexual intercourse on June 2 and June 23, and her period has not arrived yet.
She has been under a lot of stress due to a new job, and with the recent hot weather and having eaten a lot of cold foods, today she is experiencing abdominal bloating and pain, thinking her period might be coming.
However, the menstrual flow is very light, just a little bit.
I would like to ask if this could be due to stress and eating cold foods.
Thank you, doctor.

Mr. Lin, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/07/01

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the chances of pregnancy should be low, but you can take a pregnancy test to check.
Wishing you good health.

It sounds like your girlfriend is experiencing a range of symptoms that could be related to several factors, including stress, dietary habits, and potential hormonal changes. Let's break down the situation to better understand what might be happening.

Firstly, it's important to note that stress can significantly impact the menstrual cycle. The body responds to stress by releasing hormones such as cortisol, which can interfere with the normal hormonal balance that regulates the menstrual cycle. This disruption can lead to irregular periods, missed periods, or changes in menstrual flow. Given that your girlfriend has recently started a new job and is experiencing increased stress, this could certainly be a contributing factor to her current situation.

Additionally, dietary habits can also play a role in menstrual health. You mentioned that she has been eating a lot of ice and possibly consuming cold foods. While there is no direct scientific evidence linking the consumption of cold foods to menstrual irregularities, some cultures believe that excessive cold intake can affect the body's internal balance. However, this is more anecdotal than scientifically proven. It’s more likely that her overall diet, including nutrition and hydration, could influence her menstrual cycle. A balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and adequate hydration is essential for maintaining hormonal balance.

The symptoms of abdominal bloating and mild pain could be related to a variety of factors, including premenstrual syndrome (PMS), digestive issues, or even early signs of pregnancy. Since you mentioned that you and your girlfriend have had unprotected intercourse, it is also important to consider the possibility of pregnancy. A missed period is one of the earliest signs of pregnancy, and if she has not had her period since June 1st, it may be worthwhile for her to take a home pregnancy test to rule out this possibility.

If the test is negative and her symptoms persist, it would be advisable for her to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly blood tests, to determine if there are any underlying health issues that need to be addressed. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or other hormonal imbalances can also lead to irregular menstrual cycles and should be considered.

In summary, your girlfriend's missed period and associated symptoms could be influenced by stress, dietary habits, and hormonal changes. It is essential for her to monitor her symptoms closely and consider taking a pregnancy test if her period does not arrive soon. If her symptoms continue or worsen, seeking medical advice would be the best course of action to ensure her overall health and well-being.
