Dyspareunia
Hello doctor, I haven't had any issues with sexual intercourse before, but recently I've felt discomfort whenever my boyfriend thrusts hard on my left side.
However, the discomfort goes away once he stops.
There are no abnormal discharges, and I don't experience any pain outside of sexual activity.
What could be the possible reason for this?

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, it could be inflammation.
If there is no improvement, it is recommended to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

Experiencing discomfort or pain during intercourse can be concerning, especially if it is a recent development. There are several potential causes for this type of pain, and understanding them can help you address the issue effectively.
1. Anatomical Factors: One possible reason for discomfort during intercourse could be anatomical. If there are any structural issues, such as a tilted uterus or fibroids, they may cause pain when pressure is applied to certain areas during intercourse. Additionally, if there is any inflammation or irritation in the pelvic region, it could lead to discomfort.
2. Muscle Tension: Another common cause of pain during intercourse is muscle tension. The pelvic floor muscles can become tight or tense due to stress, anxiety, or even physical activity. This tension can lead to discomfort during penetration. If you find that you are tense or anxious during intercourse, it may be beneficial to practice relaxation techniques or pelvic floor exercises to help alleviate this tension.
3. Vaginal Dryness: Although you mentioned that there are no abnormal secretions, vaginal dryness can still occur for various reasons, including hormonal changes, stress, or certain medications. Insufficient lubrication can lead to friction and discomfort during intercourse. Using a water-based lubricant can help alleviate this issue.
4. Infections or Inflammation: While you noted that there are no unusual discharges, it is still important to consider the possibility of infections or inflammation that may not present with obvious symptoms. Conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), vulvodynia, or even a urinary tract infection (UTI) can cause discomfort during intercourse. If the pain persists, it may be worth consulting a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
5. Positioning: Sometimes, the position during intercourse can also contribute to discomfort. Certain positions may put pressure on sensitive areas, leading to pain. Experimenting with different positions to find what is most comfortable for both you and your partner can be helpful.
6. Psychological Factors: Emotional and psychological factors can also play a significant role in sexual comfort. If there are any underlying issues such as anxiety about the relationship or past trauma, these can manifest as physical discomfort during intercourse. Open communication with your partner and possibly seeking counseling can help address these concerns.
7. Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as endometriosis or ovarian cysts, can cause pain during intercourse. If you suspect that there may be an underlying medical condition, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider for a thorough examination and appropriate tests.
In summary, while occasional discomfort during intercourse can be normal, persistent pain should not be ignored. It is advisable to keep track of when the pain occurs, any accompanying symptoms, and any changes in your health or lifestyle. If the discomfort continues or worsens, seeking medical advice is essential. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly imaging studies, to determine the underlying cause of your discomfort and recommend appropriate treatment options. Remember, open communication with your partner about your experiences and comfort levels is also crucial in maintaining a healthy sexual relationship.
