Foreign body sensation in the throat?
Two weeks ago, I had tonsillitis, and I experienced a sore throat at that time.
Now that I have recovered, I sometimes feel like there is something in my throat, and I often feel the urge to cough and have throat pain when speaking.
Is this a residual effect? Will it get better?

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello, it may be related to an infection.
If there is no significant pain or discomfort, you can start by drinking more water and observe your condition.
If the discomfort persists and does not improve, it is advisable to seek medical attention again for further evaluation.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
Experiencing a sensation of a foreign body in the throat after recovering from tonsillitis is not uncommon and can be attributed to several factors related to the healing process and residual effects of the infection. Tonsillitis, which is the inflammation of the tonsils, often leads to significant discomfort, pain, and swelling in the throat. Once the acute phase of the infection resolves, some individuals may continue to experience lingering symptoms, including the sensation of something being stuck in the throat, which can be distressing.
Possible Causes of Throat Foreign Body Sensation
1. Post-Inflammatory Changes: After an episode of tonsillitis, the tissues in the throat may still be sensitive or inflamed. This can lead to a heightened awareness of sensations in the throat, making it feel as though there is something present when there is not.
2. Mucosal Healing: The mucosal lining of the throat may take time to heal completely after inflammation. During this healing phase, individuals may experience dryness, irritation, or a feeling of tightness, which can mimic the sensation of a foreign body.
3. Pharyngeal Muscle Tension: The muscles in the throat may become tense or spasm as a reaction to pain or discomfort experienced during the tonsillitis. This tension can create a sensation of constriction or the feeling that something is lodged in the throat.
4. Psychological Factors: Anxiety or stress related to the previous illness can also contribute to the perception of a foreign body sensation. The mind can amplify physical sensations, especially after experiencing pain or discomfort.
5. Residual Swelling: Even after the infection has cleared, there may be residual swelling in the tonsillar area or surrounding tissues, which can contribute to the sensation of fullness or obstruction.
Management and Recommendations
- Hydration: Staying well-hydrated can help soothe the throat and reduce any dryness or irritation that may be contributing to the sensation.
- Humidification: Using a humidifier in your living space can add moisture to the air, which may help alleviate throat discomfort and promote healing.
- Saltwater Gargles: Gargling with warm salt water can help reduce inflammation and soothe the throat, potentially easing the sensation of a foreign body.
- Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong odors, and other irritants that can exacerbate throat discomfort.
- Monitor Symptoms: If the sensation persists or worsens, or if you develop new symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, persistent pain, or fever, it is important to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation.
- Follow-Up with a Specialist: If the sensation continues to be bothersome, consider seeing an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination to rule out any underlying issues, such as residual infection, structural abnormalities, or other conditions that may be causing the sensation.
Conclusion
In summary, the sensation of a foreign body in the throat following tonsillitis is likely a result of the healing process and can be managed with simple home remedies. While it is usually not a cause for concern, persistent or worsening symptoms should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to ensure there are no underlying complications. With time and appropriate care, most individuals find that these sensations diminish as the throat fully recovers.
