Incorrect timing for the insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD)?
Hello, doctor.
I have been using an intrauterine device (IUD) for six months, and my menstrual cycle has been regular with no other issues.
However, last month (June), I decided to give my body a break, so I removed the IUD on May 25 and did not reinsert it until June 15, which was not during my menstrual period.
My regular menstrual cycle starts at the beginning of the month (it should be on July 1 this month), but it is currently three days late.
Since this was not my first insertion, I thought it would be fine to do it outside of my menstrual period.
Could this affect the timing of my menstruation? It seems to be delayed this time.
Additionally, at the end of last month (while the IUD was in place and after external ejaculation), is the contraceptive effectiveness still normal, or could the different timing of insertion reduce its effectiveness? Should I continue to keep it in until July 6 (the end of the third week) or should I remove it sooner?

It is recommended to remove the contraceptive device first and check for any signs of pregnancy.
If menstruation continues to be absent, it is advised to visit a gynecologist for an examination.

The timing of intrauterine device (IUD) insertion can indeed have implications for both menstrual cycle regularity and contraceptive effectiveness. In your case, you mentioned that you had been using the IUD for six months with regular menstrual cycles, but after removing it on May 25, you inserted it again on June 15, which was outside of your usual menstrual period. This situation raises a few important points regarding menstrual cycle changes and contraceptive efficacy.
Firstly, it is essential to understand that the IUD is designed to provide long-term contraception, and its effectiveness is generally not significantly affected by the timing of insertion, provided that it is inserted correctly. However, the timing of insertion can influence your menstrual cycle. When an IUD is inserted outside of your menstrual period, it may take some time for your body to adjust, which could lead to changes in your cycle, including delays. This adjustment period can vary from person to person, and it is not uncommon for individuals to experience irregularities in their menstrual cycles after a new insertion.
In your case, since you inserted the IUD on June 15 and your expected period was around July 1, a delay of three days could be attributed to the timing of the insertion. The hormonal changes that occur when the IUD is placed can affect the endometrial lining and the hormonal signals that regulate your menstrual cycle. Therefore, it is possible that the delay you are experiencing is a result of the recent IUD insertion rather than an indication of pregnancy or contraceptive failure.
Regarding the contraceptive effectiveness, the IUD is highly effective at preventing pregnancy, and its efficacy is not significantly diminished by the timing of insertion, especially if it was placed correctly. The fact that you had the IUD in place during the time of intercourse, even with withdrawal (the "pull-out" method), means that you were still protected against pregnancy. The IUD works primarily by preventing sperm from fertilizing an egg and by creating an environment in the uterus that is not conducive to implantation.
As for whether you should continue to keep the IUD in place or remove it, it is generally advisable to leave it in for the full duration recommended by your healthcare provider unless you experience significant discomfort or other concerning symptoms. If you are worried about the delay in your period or if you experience any unusual symptoms (such as severe pain, heavy bleeding, or signs of infection), it would be prudent to consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
In summary, the timing of IUD insertion can affect menstrual cycle regularity, but it does not significantly impact contraceptive effectiveness. If you have concerns about your menstrual cycle or the IUD, it is always best to discuss them with your healthcare provider, who can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current situation.
