Why Does My Ankle Itch Like Bugs Crawling While Brushing Teeth? - Dermatology

It feels like there are many insects crawling on my ankle while brushing my teeth?

It has been a long time, probably since childhood, but I forgot.
When I brush my teeth while standing, my ankles feel itchy, similar to the sensation of many bugs crawling.
This happens especially when I use dental floss for an extended period.
However, it usually resolves quickly once I finish brushing and start moving around or sitting for a short while.
Since it has been so long, I thought I would specifically ask what the cause might be.
I have searched online and found that some people experience restless legs syndrome, but that seems to occur while lying down.
My situation feels unique, and I couldn't find much information about it.
It doesn't affect my daily life; it only happens when I'm brushing my teeth.
Haha.
Doctor, have you encountered this before? Thank you.

I haven't encountered this before, but it might be a good idea to start by getting checked in the field of neurology.

It sounds like you're experiencing a peculiar sensation in your ankle while brushing your teeth, which can be quite bothersome. The feeling of itching or the sensation of bugs crawling on your skin, especially localized to the ankle area, can be attributed to several potential causes.
One possibility is related to a phenomenon known as "paresthesia," which refers to abnormal sensations in the skin, such as tingling, itching, or a crawling feeling. This can occur due to various reasons, including nerve compression, poor circulation, or even anxiety. When you stand for an extended period while brushing your teeth, it might lead to temporary nerve compression or reduced blood flow to the area, resulting in that crawling sensation.
Another consideration is the position of your body while brushing your teeth. If you're standing in a way that puts pressure on your lower limbs or if you're tensing your muscles, it could lead to sensations of discomfort or itching. Additionally, if you have any underlying skin conditions, such as eczema or allergies, these could also manifest as itching, particularly when your skin is in contact with certain materials (like the toothbrush or toothpaste) or when you're in a specific position.

Moreover, the phenomenon you mentioned regarding "restless leg syndrome" (RLS) is typically characterized by uncomfortable sensations in the legs and an uncontrollable urge to move them, often occurring when at rest. While RLS usually manifests when lying down or sitting, it can sometimes be triggered by prolonged standing or specific activities, such as brushing your teeth.

Since this sensation occurs specifically during the act of brushing your teeth and resolves shortly after you stop, it may not be indicative of a serious underlying condition. However, if it persists or worsens, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They may conduct a physical examination and possibly recommend tests to rule out any neurological or vascular issues.

In the meantime, here are a few suggestions that might help alleviate the sensation:
1. Change Your Position: Try adjusting your stance while brushing your teeth. You might find that shifting your weight or moving around a bit can help reduce the sensation.

2. Take Breaks: If you're brushing your teeth for an extended period, consider taking short breaks to relieve any pressure on your legs and ankles.

3. Moisturize: If the itching is related to dry skin, applying a moisturizer to your ankles before brushing might help.

4. Consult a Specialist: If the sensation continues to be bothersome, consider seeing a dermatologist or a neurologist who can provide more specialized insight.

In summary, while the sensation you're experiencing is unusual, it may not be a cause for concern. However, keeping an eye on it and seeking professional advice if it persists is always a good approach. Remember, your health and comfort are paramount, and it's important to address any concerns you may have.
