Sudden Rapid Heartbeat and Low Oxygen: Your Symptoms - Internal Medicine

Sudden increase in heart rate while sitting, decreased blood oxygen levels, and hand tremors?

Hello doctor, after taking a shower tonight, I sat down and suddenly experienced a rapid heartbeat that shot up to over 120 beats per minute.
My blood oxygen level dropped from 99 to 93, and I started shaking and feeling cold all over, with a slightly yellowish complexion.
I was scared and thought I might be infected, but a rapid test came back negative.
I'm not sure what's going on.
I've been having frequent headaches and tinnitus, and I've been taking painkillers.
I also have a history of nasal allergies and post-nasal drip.
Tonight, I drank hot honey lemon water and then green tea, and then this happened...
Could it be related? I previously had issues with arrhythmia, but that has improved.
I've also been drinking a lot of herbal teas for pandemic prevention.
Is there a connection? I have experienced rapid heart rates before, but never to the point of shaking all over.
At that time, I took two antiarrhythmic pills, and my condition improved, but I'm really scared about what might be happening.
I'm afraid I might suddenly die.
😭

Based on your description, it is likely that the significant temperature changes have activated the sympathetic nervous system, leading to your symptoms.
It is advisable to avoid drastic temperature fluctuations and to take care to keep warm after bathing.
The rapid heartbeat may require a visit to a cardiology clinic for an electrocardiogram to determine if there are any arrhythmias that could be affecting your condition.
Regarding the herbal remedy you mentioned, it indeed has many side effects, including palpitations, so I recommend discontinuing its use.
Overall, this situation does not pose an immediate life threat, but it is advisable to seek a cardiology consultation as soon as possible to check for any potential sudden arrhythmias.
Thank you for your inquiry.

Experiencing a sudden rapid heartbeat, especially when accompanied by low oxygen levels and other distressing symptoms, can be alarming. Based on your description, it seems you encountered a significant episode that may be related to several factors, including anxiety, physiological responses to stress, and possibly the consumption of certain beverages.

Firstly, let's break down the symptoms you experienced. A rapid heartbeat (tachycardia) can occur for various reasons, including anxiety, dehydration, excessive caffeine intake, or even a response to certain medications. In your case, the combination of drinking hot honey lemon water followed by green tea could have contributed to this episode. Both beverages can stimulate the heart, especially if consumed in large quantities or if you are sensitive to caffeine.

The drop in blood oxygen levels from 99% to 93% is noteworthy. While 93% is still within a generally acceptable range, it indicates that your body may have been under stress. The shaking and feeling cold could be signs of a sympathetic nervous system response, often referred to as the "fight or flight" response, which can occur during panic attacks or severe anxiety episodes.

Your history of heart rhythm issues adds another layer of complexity. If you have previously experienced arrhythmias, it is crucial to monitor any new symptoms closely. While your past episodes may have resolved with medication, the recurrence of symptoms warrants further investigation. It’s essential to consult with a healthcare provider who can evaluate your heart health comprehensively, including an electrocardiogram (ECG) and possibly a Holter monitor to assess your heart rhythm over a more extended period.

Additionally, your mention of frequent headaches and tinnitus (ear ringing) could suggest that you are experiencing heightened stress or anxiety levels. Chronic stress can lead to various physical symptoms, including headaches and cardiovascular responses. It’s also worth considering that nasal allergies and post-nasal drip can contribute to discomfort and may exacerbate anxiety symptoms.

Given your concerns about your health, it is advisable to take the following steps:
1. Consult a Healthcare Professional: Schedule an appointment with a cardiologist to discuss your symptoms, especially considering your history of heart rhythm issues. They may recommend further testing to rule out any underlying cardiac conditions.

2. Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep a diary of your symptoms, noting when they occur, their duration, and any potential triggers (like food, drink, or stressors). This information can be valuable for your healthcare provider.

3. Manage Stress and Anxiety: Consider incorporating relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga into your routine. These practices can help manage anxiety and may reduce the frequency of episodes.

4. Evaluate Your Diet: Be mindful of your caffeine intake and how it affects your body. If you notice a correlation between caffeine consumption and your symptoms, it may be beneficial to reduce your intake.

5. Stay Hydrated: Ensure you are drinking enough water throughout the day, as dehydration can also lead to increased heart rate and other symptoms.

6. Follow-Up on Allergies: Since you mentioned having nasal allergies, it might be helpful to consult an allergist to manage your symptoms better, which could indirectly alleviate some of the stress and discomfort you are experiencing.

In summary, while your symptoms may be related to anxiety and physiological responses to stress, it is essential to rule out any underlying cardiac issues, especially given your history. Taking proactive steps to manage your health and seeking professional guidance will help you feel more secure and informed about your condition.
