White gums?
Hello, doctor.
I am a pregnant woman.
I had a root canal treatment at the dentist last night, and this morning I noticed that the gum tissue where the anesthesia was applied has turned white.
It feels a bit strange in that area of my mouth, and I also feel a slight pain when I touch the outside of my cheek near the gum.
Is this normal? Thank you, doctor.

Hello: During the treatment process, it is possible that some of the gingival soft tissue may have been injured, and the cheek may have been slightly pulled.
It is recommended to apply a brief ice pack to alleviate the discomfort.
Sincerely, Lin Chia-Yung, Department of Dentistry, Taichung Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

More Info
It is not uncommon for gums to appear white after a root canal treatment, especially in the area where anesthesia was administered. This whitening can be attributed to a few factors, including the effects of the anesthetic, trauma to the gum tissue, or even the presence of inflammation.
When local anesthesia is injected, it can cause temporary changes in the appearance of the gum tissue. The anesthetic may lead to a reduction in blood flow to the area, resulting in a pale or white appearance. Additionally, if there was any trauma to the gum tissue during the procedure, it could also contribute to the discoloration.
However, if the white appearance is accompanied by pain, swelling, or any signs of infection (such as pus or increased redness), it is essential to consult your dentist or an oral surgeon. These symptoms could indicate a complication, such as an infection or necrosis of the gum tissue, which may require further evaluation and treatment.
In your case, since you mentioned that you are experiencing mild pain in the area, it is advisable to monitor the situation closely. If the pain persists or worsens, or if you notice any additional symptoms, you should seek a follow-up appointment with your dentist. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including X-rays, to assess the health of the tooth and surrounding tissues.
It's also important to consider that during pregnancy, hormonal changes can affect your gums, making them more sensitive and prone to inflammation. This condition, known as pregnancy gingivitis, can exacerbate any discomfort you may be feeling after dental procedures. Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial during this time, so be sure to brush gently and floss regularly to keep your gums healthy.
In summary, while it can be normal for gums to appear white after a root canal treatment due to anesthesia or minor trauma, any persistent pain or additional symptoms should prompt a visit to your dentist for further assessment. Your oral health is vital, especially during pregnancy, and addressing any concerns promptly can help ensure a smooth recovery.
