Car accident injuries?

Hello Doctor: I was in a car accident two days ago, where I was rear-ended by another vehicle.
At the moment of impact, I experienced severe pain in my left hip and was unable to get up; I had to crawl on the ground.
After being transported to the hospital by ambulance, I had an X-ray, and the emergency doctor said there were no fractures, just a contusion in my hip.
However, the next day I continued to experience pain, and my entire back, lower back, and especially my neck and shoulders are in significant discomfort.
I cannot turn my neck, and I am unable to lie flat or turn over while sleeping.
I have to take pain medication to sleep, and my vision has become somewhat blurry; things that I could see clearly now require effort to focus on, which also causes headaches.
Which specialist should I see? Thank you.

More Info

After a car accident, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely and seek appropriate medical attention when necessary. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing significant pain and discomfort in multiple areas, including your left hip, back, neck, and even some visual disturbances. Here’s a breakdown of your situation and recommendations for further action.

Symptoms and Concerns
1. Hip Pain and Bruising: You mentioned that your hip was injured during the accident, and while the X-ray showed no fractures, bruising can still cause significant pain and limit mobility. Bruising can take time to heal, but persistent pain should not be ignored.

2. Back and Neck Pain: The pain radiating to your back and neck, along with the inability to turn your neck, raises concerns about potential soft tissue injuries, such as strains or sprains. Whiplash is a common injury in rear-end collisions and can lead to neck stiffness and pain.

3. Visual Disturbances and Headaches: The blurred vision and headaches you are experiencing could be indicative of a concussion or other head trauma, even if no fractures were detected. It is essential to take these symptoms seriously, as they can signify underlying issues that may require further evaluation.

When to Seek Medical Attention
Given the complexity of your symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly. Here are some specific recommendations:
- Visit an Emergency Room (ER): If your symptoms worsen, especially the visual disturbances or if you experience severe headaches, dizziness, or confusion, you should go to the ER immediately. These could be signs of a more serious condition, such as a concussion or intracranial injury.

- Consult a Specialist: If your symptoms are stable but concerning, consider seeing a specialist. A neurologist would be appropriate for your headaches and visual issues, while an orthopedic doctor or a physiatrist (rehabilitation specialist) can help with your musculoskeletal pain.

- Physical Therapy: Once you have been evaluated and cleared for any serious injuries, physical therapy may be beneficial for your neck and back pain. A physical therapist can provide exercises and treatments to improve mobility and reduce pain.

Additional Considerations
- Pain Management: Continue to use pain relief methods as prescribed by your doctor. Over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain and inflammation, but be sure to follow the recommended dosages.

- Rest and Recovery: Give your body time to heal. Avoid activities that exacerbate your pain, and try to rest as much as possible. Ice packs can help reduce swelling in the affected areas.

- Monitor Symptoms: Keep a close eye on your symptoms. If you notice any new symptoms or if existing symptoms worsen, seek medical attention immediately.

Conclusion
In summary, while it is reassuring that your X-rays did not show any fractures, the presence of ongoing pain, neck stiffness, and visual disturbances warrants further evaluation. It is essential to prioritize your health and seek the appropriate medical care to ensure a full recovery. Do not hesitate to reach out to healthcare professionals who can provide the necessary support and treatment for your injuries.
