Gingivectomy

I had a gingival flap surgery yesterday at the dental clinic on the right side.
The doctor said that once the anesthesia wears off, I can start eating.
However, when I tried to chew on the right side, I felt some pain and noticed a little bit of bleeding.
Is this normal, or should I wait a few days before eating on the right side?

Hello: It is recommended to wait for 5 to 7 days after the wound has healed before starting to bear weight.

More Info

After undergoing gum surgery, such as gingival flap surgery, it is common to experience some level of pain and bleeding as part of the healing process. Here’s a detailed explanation of what you might expect and when you should be concerned.

Normal Post-Operative Symptoms
1. Pain: It is typical to feel some discomfort or pain after gum surgery. The anesthesia used during the procedure will wear off, and as it does, you may start to feel soreness in the area where the surgery was performed. This pain can vary in intensity but is generally manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, unless your dentist has prescribed something stronger.

2. Bleeding: Light bleeding or oozing from the surgical site can occur, especially within the first 24 hours post-surgery. This is usually not a cause for alarm. However, if the bleeding is persistent or heavy, it is essential to contact your dentist. They may advise you to bite down on a gauze pad to help control the bleeding.

3. Swelling and Bruising: Swelling is another common symptom following gum surgery. It typically peaks around 48 hours post-operation and can be managed with ice packs applied to the outside of the cheek. Bruising may also occur but usually resolves within a week or two.

4. Sensitivity: The surgical site may be sensitive to temperature changes and certain foods. It is advisable to avoid very hot, cold, or spicy foods for a few days to minimize discomfort.

Eating After Surgery
Regarding your question about eating on the side where the surgery was performed, it is generally recommended to avoid chewing on that side for at least a few days. This allows the surgical site to begin healing without additional irritation. If you feel pain while chewing, it is a sign that you should refrain from using that side until you feel more comfortable. Soft foods that require minimal chewing, such as yogurt, smoothies, and mashed potatoes, can be good options during the initial recovery phase.

When to Seek Help
While some pain and bleeding are normal, you should reach out to your dentist if you experience any of the following:
- Severe Pain: If the pain becomes unbearable or does not improve with medication.

- Heavy Bleeding: If you notice that the bleeding does not stop after applying pressure for 30 minutes or if it becomes heavy.

- Signs of Infection: Symptoms such as increased swelling, redness, pus, or fever could indicate an infection and should be evaluated by your dentist promptly.

Conclusion
In summary, experiencing some pain and light bleeding after gum surgery is normal. However, it is crucial to listen to your body and avoid using the surgical site for chewing until you feel ready. If you have any concerns about your recovery or if symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to contact your dental professional for guidance. They can provide you with the best advice tailored to your specific situation and ensure that your healing process is on track.
