Delayed menstruation?
On June 26th, there was unprotected intercourse (the day after ovulation).
My menstrual cycle is typically 28-30 days, and it has been regular.
I was supposed to get my period around July 9-10, but as of July 14, I still haven't gotten it.
I took a pregnancy test, which came back negative (not using first morning urine).
Is this result accurate? If my period still doesn't come, how long should I wait before testing again? Thank you, doctor.

Dr. Lin Manying reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hsuan: Hello, a qualified pregnancy test should have an accuracy rate close to 100% if used within the expiration date and within the recommended time frame.
If your period does not arrive, it is advisable to take another test after three days or to consult a gynecologist.

When it comes to understanding delayed menstruation and the appropriate timing for pregnancy testing, several factors need to be considered. Based on your description, you had unprotected intercourse on June 26, which was around the second day after your ovulation. Given your regular menstrual cycle of 28-30 days, you would typically expect your period to start around July 9-10. Since you did not get your period by July 14 and tested negative for pregnancy, it raises some important questions.
Firstly, the accuracy of home pregnancy tests can vary depending on several factors, including the sensitivity of the test, the timing of the test in relation to your expected period, and whether you used the first morning urine, which is generally more concentrated and can yield more accurate results. Testing too early, especially before your expected period, can lead to false negatives. Since you tested on July 14, which is about 4-5 days after your expected period, the likelihood of a false negative decreases, but it is still possible.
If your period does not arrive, it is advisable to wait a few days and then retest. A good rule of thumb is to wait at least one week after your missed period to take another pregnancy test. This allows enough time for the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced during pregnancy, to build up in your urine to detectable levels if you are indeed pregnant.
In addition to the timing of the test, psychological factors can also play a significant role in menstrual irregularities. Stress, anxiety, and significant lifestyle changes can lead to delayed menstruation, even in women with previously regular cycles. If you have experienced any recent stressors, it may be worth considering this as a potential factor.
If you continue to experience a delayed period and repeated pregnancy tests remain negative, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a blood test to measure hCG levels, which is more sensitive than urine tests and can provide a definitive answer regarding pregnancy. Additionally, they can evaluate other potential causes for your missed period, such as hormonal imbalances, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or other underlying health issues.
In summary, while your initial negative pregnancy test is a good indicator, it is essential to consider retesting after a week if your period does not arrive. If you have concerns or if your symptoms persist, seeking medical advice is the best course of action. Regular check-ups and open communication with your healthcare provider can help ensure your reproductive health remains a priority.
