Emergency contraceptive pill
I would like to ask the doctor why there is withdrawal bleeding after stopping the oral contraceptive pill.
What is the reason for this? How many days does the bleeding typically last? Will stopping the medication suddenly disrupt the menstrual cycle? I understand that the pill can regulate the cycle, but will the menstrual period remain regular after stopping the medication? How long after stopping the pill can I expect my period to return? Thank you for your response, doctor.
Alen, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/07/15
Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the withdrawal bleeding is due to changes in hormone levels in the blood, and irregular bleeding can occur after suddenly stopping medication.
After discontinuation, the menstrual cycle may not necessarily remain regular, and menstruation may occur approximately 2 to 5 days after stopping the medication.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

More Info
Withdrawal bleeding after stopping birth control pills is a common phenomenon that many women experience. When you take hormonal contraceptives, such as birth control pills, they work by providing a steady level of hormones (estrogen and progestin) in your body. These hormones prevent ovulation, thicken cervical mucus, and thin the uterine lining, making it less likely for a fertilized egg to implant.
When you stop taking the pills, your body is suddenly deprived of these hormones, which leads to a drop in hormone levels. This hormonal withdrawal triggers the shedding of the uterine lining, resulting in what is known as withdrawal bleeding. This bleeding is similar to a menstrual period but is not considered a true menstrual cycle since it is induced by the sudden change in hormone levels rather than ovulation.
The duration of withdrawal bleeding can vary from woman to woman but typically lasts anywhere from 2 to 7 days. Some women may experience lighter or shorter bleeding, while others may have heavier bleeding. It is important to note that the experience can differ based on individual hormonal balance and how long the birth control pills were taken.
Regarding your concern about menstrual irregularities after stopping the pill, it is common for women to experience changes in their menstrual cycle. Some may find that their periods return to their pre-pill regularity quickly, while others may experience irregular cycles for a few months. It can take time for your body to readjust and for your natural hormonal rhythm to re-establish itself. In some cases, it may take a few cycles for your periods to become regular again.
If you have been on birth control for an extended period, it is not unusual for your first few cycles after stopping to be irregular or different from what you experienced while on the pill. Factors such as stress, weight changes, and underlying health conditions can also influence the regularity of your menstrual cycle.
As for when your next period will arrive after stopping the pill, it can vary. Some women may have their period within a few days after stopping the pills, while others may take a few weeks. If you do not have a period within a month after stopping the pill, it may be a good idea to take a pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy, especially if you have had unprotected intercourse.
In summary, withdrawal bleeding is a normal response to stopping birth control pills due to the sudden drop in hormone levels. The duration of this bleeding can vary, and menstrual cycles may take some time to regulate after discontinuation. If you have concerns about your menstrual cycle or experience significant irregularities, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider for personalized guidance and support. They can help assess your situation and provide recommendations based on your health history and individual needs.
