Post-COVID Cough: When to Seek Medical Help and Treatment Options - Otolaryngology

COVID-19 Cough

Diagnosed on July 14, I had a cough with yellow phlegm and sneezing.
The doctor prescribed antibiotics, which I took until the 25th, after which I stopped.
Currently, I still have a noticeable cough in the morning and evening, and sometimes I sneeze as well.
I started taking Chuanbei Loquat Syrup on July 29.
Should I see a doctor to get more medication, or is taking the syrup sufficient? Is it common for a cough to last a long time after diagnosis? Do I need to get an X-ray to check my lung condition? Thank you.

Hello, if the persistent cough does not show significant improvement, it is recommended to seek medical attention again to confirm whether there is pneumonia or other infectious symptoms.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Post-COVID cough can be a lingering symptom for many individuals who have recovered from COVID-19. It is not uncommon for patients to experience a persistent cough, sometimes accompanied by phlegm, even weeks after the initial infection has resolved. In your case, having been diagnosed on July 14 and still experiencing significant coughing and sneezing, it is essential to consider a few factors before deciding on the next steps.

Firstly, it is important to understand that a post-COVID cough can be attributed to several factors. These may include residual inflammation in the airways, bronchial hyperreactivity, or even secondary infections that may have developed during or after the initial COVID-19 infection. The presence of yellow phlegm can sometimes indicate a bacterial infection, which may require further medical evaluation and possibly additional antibiotics.
Given that you were prescribed antibiotics and have completed the course, yet your symptoms persist, it may be beneficial to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination and possibly imaging studies such as a chest X-ray. This imaging can help rule out any complications such as pneumonia or other pulmonary issues that may not have been present during your initial diagnosis.

As for your current treatment with Chuanbei Pipa Gao (a traditional Chinese herbal syrup), while it may provide some symptomatic relief, it is crucial to ensure that it is used in conjunction with appropriate medical advice. Herbal remedies can be beneficial, but they should not replace conventional treatments, especially if there is a risk of an underlying infection or other complications.

In terms of the duration of a post-COVID cough, it can vary significantly from person to person. Some individuals may experience a cough for several weeks to months after recovery, while others may find that their symptoms resolve more quickly. Factors such as pre-existing respiratory conditions (like asthma or COPD), the severity of the initial COVID-19 infection, and individual health status can all influence recovery time.

In summary, while it is possible that your cough may resolve with time and supportive care, given the persistence of your symptoms and the presence of yellow phlegm, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They can assess your condition more thoroughly, determine if further treatment is necessary, and provide guidance on managing your symptoms effectively. If you experience any worsening of symptoms, such as increased difficulty breathing, chest pain, or high fever, seek medical attention immediately. Your health and well-being should always be the priority.
