Earwax odor and a feeling of fullness in the ear?
Hello, doctor.
I started noticing a feeling of fullness in my left ear three days ago.
I have been cleaning my ears, and the earwax from my left ear smells worse than that from my right ear.
The earwax is yellow and stickier than usual, but I don't have any pain; it just feels like my ear is blocked.
Could this phenomenon be related to otitis media, or is it a fungal infection?

Ear discomfort can arise from various causes, including earwax buildup, infections, or other underlying conditions. Based on your description of a feeling of fullness in the left ear, along with the presence of yellow, sticky earwax, it is essential to consider a few possibilities.
Firstly, the sensation of fullness or pressure in the ear can often be attributed to earwax (cerumen) impaction. Earwax serves a protective function for the ear canal, but when it accumulates excessively, it can lead to blockage. This blockage can create a feeling of pressure or fullness, and in some cases, it may also affect hearing. The fact that you mentioned the earwax is more odorous and sticky than usual could indicate that it is impacted or that there may be an underlying issue, such as an infection.
While you do not currently experience pain, it is important to note that infections can sometimes develop without immediate pain. For instance, otitis externa (outer ear infection) or otitis media (middle ear infection) can occur, and they may present with symptoms such as fullness, hearing changes, or even discharge, but not necessarily pain at the onset. The yellow, sticky nature of your earwax could also suggest a possible infection, particularly if it is accompanied by other symptoms like itching or discharge.
Another consideration is the possibility of a fungal infection, especially if you have a history of moisture exposure in the ear (such as swimming or showering). Fungal infections can lead to symptoms similar to those of bacterial infections, including a feeling of fullness, discharge, and sometimes itching. However, these infections are typically accompanied by other signs, such as irritation or a distinct odor.
Given your symptoms, it is advisable to seek evaluation from an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination of your ears, including otoscopy, to assess the condition of your ear canal and eardrum. They may also take a sample of the earwax or any discharge for laboratory analysis to determine if there is an infection and what type it may be.
In the meantime, avoid inserting objects into your ear, such as cotton swabs, as this can push earwax further into the canal and potentially cause more blockage or injury. If you experience any new symptoms, such as pain, fever, or hearing loss, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
In summary, while your symptoms could be related to earwax buildup, they may also indicate an infection or other ear-related issues. A visit to an ENT specialist will provide clarity and appropriate treatment options. Maintaining ear hygiene and being cautious about moisture exposure can help prevent future issues.
