Menstruation has not occurred for almost three months?

I haven't had my period for three months.
I missed my period in June and thought I would wait until the next month to see if it would come, but it still didn't arrive.
On July 14, I bought two pregnancy tests, and both showed two lines.
At that moment, I thought I would wait a bit longer before seeing a doctor.
I went to the hospital around July 20 for a check-up, but the doctor said there was nothing wrong.
What could this mean? Is it a false pregnancy or some other symptoms? The doctor informed me that my period would likely come around July 28, but by August 2, it still hadn't arrived.
What could be going on? I'm feeling anxious and scared.

Xiao Han, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/08/02

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, first take a pregnancy test.
If there are two lines, it indicates pregnancy.
If not, consider whether to have a blood test to check hormone levels.
Wishing you good health.

It sounds like you are going through a very stressful and confusing time regarding your menstrual cycle and potential pregnancy. Let's break down the situation and explore the possible causes and concerns related to your missed periods and the pregnancy tests you took.

Firstly, a missed period can be caused by a variety of factors, and it is not uncommon for women to experience irregularities in their menstrual cycles at some point in their lives. Some common reasons for missed periods include:
1. Pregnancy: As you mentioned, you took two pregnancy tests, both of which showed two lines, indicating a positive result. However, when you visited the doctor, they indicated that you were not pregnant. This discrepancy could be due to several factors, including the timing of the tests, the sensitivity of the test, or even the possibility of a chemical pregnancy, which occurs when a fertilized egg implants but does not develop properly.

2. Hormonal Imbalances: Hormones play a crucial role in regulating your menstrual cycle. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or other hormonal imbalances can lead to missed periods. Stress, significant weight loss or gain, and changes in exercise patterns can also affect hormone levels.

3. Stress and Lifestyle Factors: High levels of stress, anxiety, or significant lifestyle changes can impact your menstrual cycle. Emotional and physical stress can disrupt the hypothalamus, which regulates hormones that control your periods.

4. Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or eating disorders, can also lead to missed periods. If you have any underlying health issues, it might be worth discussing them with your healthcare provider.

5. Age and Developmental Factors: If you are in your late teens or early twenties, your body may still be adjusting to hormonal changes, which can lead to irregular periods.

Given that you have already consulted with a doctor, it is essential to follow their advice and keep track of any further changes in your body. If your period does not return by the end of the month, or if you continue to experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, unusual discharge, or any other concerning signs, it would be wise to seek further evaluation.

In the meantime, here are some steps you can take to help manage your situation:
- Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep a detailed record of your menstrual cycle, any symptoms you experience, and any changes in your lifestyle or stress levels. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.

- Reduce Stress: Engage in stress-reducing activities such as yoga, meditation, or gentle exercise. Taking care of your mental health is just as important as your physical health.

- Healthy Lifestyle Choices: Ensure you are eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and getting enough sleep. These factors can significantly impact your hormonal balance and overall well-being.

- Follow Up with Your Doctor: If your period does not return or if you have any new symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They may recommend blood tests or imaging studies to rule out any underlying conditions.

In summary, while it is understandable to feel anxious about missed periods and potential pregnancy, there are various factors that could be contributing to your situation. It is crucial to stay informed, monitor your health, and maintain open communication with your healthcare provider. Remember, you are not alone in this, and there are resources available to help you navigate these concerns.
