Diarrhea issues

Hello, doctor.
Recently, I have been experiencing recurrent diarrhea for over a week.
Initially, on the first day, my stool was soft but formed.
However, during the second and third bowel movements that day, the stools were small and pellet-like, resembling diarrhea (accompanied by abdominal pain before the bowel movements).
After two or three days, my stool returned to normal, but then after another two or three days, I experienced diarrhea again.
Today marks about a week of this pattern.
Just now, my stool had a normal formed consistency at the beginning, but the latter part was again diarrhea-like (in the same bowel movement).
What could this situation indicate? After experiencing diarrhea, I have been trying to avoid fried, greasy, or cold foods.
Thank you.

Based on your description, the causes of diarrhea may be related to food, lifestyle stress, or daily routines.
For example, consuming dragon fruit can easily lead to diarrhea.
Additionally, high levels of stress or anxiety can also contribute to this condition.
Generally, having bowel movements two times a day to once every two days is considered normal, unless there are several consecutive days with more than two loose stools per day, in which case medical attention is necessary.
It is advisable to maintain a regular routine, get plenty of rest, and engage in regular exercise, which should help improve the situation.
Thank you for your inquiry.

More Info

Understanding recurring diarrhea can be quite complex, as it can stem from various underlying causes. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a cycle of diarrhea interspersed with periods of normal bowel movements. This pattern can be indicative of several gastrointestinal issues, and it’s essential to consider both dietary habits and potential medical conditions.

Possible Causes of Recurring Diarrhea
1. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): One of the most common causes of recurring diarrhea is IBS, a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain and altered bowel habits. Symptoms can fluctuate between diarrhea and constipation, often triggered by stress, certain foods, or hormonal changes.

2. Infections: Gastroenteritis, often caused by viral or bacterial infections, can lead to diarrhea. If you’ve recently consumed contaminated food or water, this could be a potential cause. Symptoms typically include abdominal pain, cramping, and sometimes fever.

3. Food Intolerances or Allergies: Lactose intolerance or gluten sensitivity can also lead to diarrhea. If you notice that your symptoms worsen after consuming dairy or gluten-containing foods, it may be worth discussing with your healthcare provider.

4. Medications: Certain medications, especially antibiotics, can disrupt the normal gut flora, leading to diarrhea. If you’ve recently started or changed any medications, this could be a contributing factor.

5. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): Conditions like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis can cause chronic diarrhea, along with other symptoms like weight loss and fatigue. These conditions require medical evaluation and management.

6. Dietary Factors: Even though you mentioned avoiding fried, greasy, or cold foods, other dietary components such as high sugar intake, artificial sweeteners, or excessive caffeine can also contribute to diarrhea.

Recommendations for Management
1. Dietary Adjustments: Continue to focus on a bland diet that is low in fat and fiber during episodes of diarrhea. Foods like bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast (the BRAT diet) can help firm up stools. Gradually reintroduce other foods as your symptoms improve.

2. Hydration: It’s crucial to stay hydrated, especially if you are experiencing diarrhea. Oral rehydration solutions can help replenish lost electrolytes.

3. Probiotics: Consider incorporating probiotics into your diet, either through supplements or fermented foods like yogurt or kefir. Probiotics can help restore the balance of gut bacteria.

4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a diary of your symptoms, dietary intake, and any potential triggers. This information can be invaluable for your healthcare provider in diagnosing the underlying cause.

5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given the recurring nature of your symptoms, it’s essential to consult with a gastroenterologist. They may recommend tests such as stool studies, blood tests, or imaging studies to determine the underlying cause of your diarrhea.

6. Stress Management: Since stress can exacerbate gastrointestinal symptoms, consider incorporating stress-reducing techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, or regular exercise into your routine.

Conclusion
Recurring diarrhea can significantly impact your quality of life, and understanding its underlying causes is crucial for effective management. By monitoring your symptoms, making dietary adjustments, and seeking medical advice, you can work towards achieving better gut health. Remember, it’s essential to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and any changes you notice, as this will aid in accurate diagnosis and treatment.
