Probability of Pregnancy
Hello, Doctor: I have irregular menstrual cycles.
Recently, I consulted a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner to regulate my cycle, and for the past two to three months, my cycle has been around 30 days (but I have stopped the medication for almost one to two months now).
My last menstrual period was from July 4 to July 9.
On July 13, I engaged in some intimate touching with my boyfriend, but there was no sexual intercourse, and I don't recall any contact between his genitals and my vaginal opening.
On July 30, there was also no sexual intercourse; we were both wearing underwear and there was some friction, but no ejaculation occurred, although there was some pre-ejaculatory fluid that made my underwear slightly damp.
As of today (August 8), my period has not arrived.
Could the activities described lead to pregnancy? Or is the absence of my period simply due to my body not being in a good state? Thank you for your response, Doctor.

Hello, the chances of pregnancy should be low.
Please wait for another week, and if your period still hasn't arrived, I recommend seeing a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to understanding the chances of pregnancy with irregular menstrual cycles, it is essential to consider several factors, including the nature of your menstrual cycle, the timing of sexual activity, and the possibility of sperm exposure.
Irregular menstrual cycles can make it challenging to predict ovulation, which is the time when a woman is most fertile. Typically, ovulation occurs about 14 days before the start of your next period. However, if your cycles are irregular, this can vary significantly, making it difficult to determine when you are ovulating. In your case, you mentioned that your cycles have been around 30 days, but they have been inconsistent in the past. This inconsistency can lead to uncertainty regarding your fertile window.
Regarding the sexual activities you described, it is important to note that pregnancy can occur even without penetrative sex. Pre-ejaculate fluid (pre-cum), which can be released before ejaculation, may contain sperm. If there was any contact between this fluid and your vaginal area, there is a potential risk of pregnancy, albeit low. However, the likelihood of pregnancy from the activities you described—such as dry humping or mutual rubbing while wearing underwear—remains relatively low, especially if there was no direct ejaculation.
The absence of your period could be attributed to several factors, including stress, hormonal imbalances, or the effects of any recent changes in medication or lifestyle. Since you mentioned that you have been undergoing treatment with traditional Chinese medicine to regulate your menstrual cycle, it is possible that your body is still adjusting to these changes. Stress and anxiety about potential pregnancy can also impact your menstrual cycle, causing delays.
If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, the best course of action is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period, as they measure the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced during pregnancy. If the test is negative and your period still does not arrive, consider consulting with a healthcare provider for further evaluation. They can assess your menstrual cycle, discuss any underlying health issues, and provide guidance on managing irregular cycles.
In summary, while the activities you described carry a low risk of pregnancy, the irregularity of your menstrual cycle could be the primary reason for your missed period. Monitoring your cycle, managing stress, and consulting with a healthcare professional can help you gain better insight into your reproductive health.
