Sensation of a foreign body in the throat?

Hello Doctor: On Saturday, I ate guava and chewed it well, but I still feel like something is stuck in my throat when swallowing.
I would like to ask if fruit pulp can get stuck in the throat? Eating and drinking water are fine, but I occasionally have a sensation of a foreign body in my throat.
That day, I also experienced gastroesophageal reflux, and I had symptoms of tonsillitis a few days prior.
I'm not sure if something is actually stuck or if it's just discomfort caused by gastroesophageal reflux.

Dr. Hong Yuanbin reply Internal Medicine

Hello, fruit pulp is softer and decomposes easily, so it is less likely to get stuck in the esophagus.
Based on your description, it seems that the discomfort you are experiencing may be due to gastroesophageal reflux.
Thank you for your question.

The sensation of having a foreign body in the throat can be quite distressing and may arise from various causes. In your case, it seems that the discomfort began after eating guava, which could potentially lead to a feeling of something being stuck in the throat. However, there are several factors to consider that could explain your symptoms.

Firstly, it is possible for food particles, especially fibrous ones like those found in guava, to become lodged in the throat. This is particularly true if the food is not chewed thoroughly before swallowing. If you felt a sensation of something stuck in your throat immediately after eating, it could be due to a small piece of the fruit that did not go down smoothly. However, since you mentioned that you can eat and drink without issues, it is less likely that there is a physical obstruction.

Secondly, the symptoms you describe, including the sensation of a foreign body, could also be related to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, leading to irritation and inflammation. This can cause a range of symptoms, including heartburn, regurgitation, and the sensation of a lump in the throat (often referred to as "globus sensation"). The fact that you experienced this discomfort alongside a history of gastritis and recent inflammation of the tonsils suggests that your symptoms may be more related to acid reflux rather than a physical obstruction.

Additionally, inflammation in the throat or tonsils can lead to heightened sensitivity and discomfort, which might exacerbate the feeling of having something stuck. When the throat is inflamed, the normal sensations can be altered, leading to a perception of a foreign body even when there is none.

To address your concerns, here are some recommendations:
1. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help wash down any residual food particles and soothe the throat.

2. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect GERD, try to avoid foods and drinks that can trigger acid reflux, such as spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol.

3. Eat Slowly and Chew Thoroughly: Make sure to chew your food well before swallowing to minimize the risk of food getting stuck.

4. Over-the-Counter Antacids: If you experience heartburn or acid reflux symptoms, over-the-counter antacids may provide relief.

5. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If the sensation persists or worsens, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider. They may recommend further evaluation, such as an endoscopy, to rule out any underlying conditions.

6. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of when the sensation occurs and any accompanying symptoms. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider in determining the cause.

In summary, while it is possible that a piece of food could cause a sensation of something stuck in your throat, your symptoms may also be related to gastroesophageal reflux or throat inflammation. It is essential to monitor your symptoms and consult with a healthcare professional if they persist, as they can provide a more accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment options.
