Is the sound of water in the left ear likely to cause a headache in the left temple during weight training?

Doctor, may I ask: Recently, during weight training (when exerting myself), I experience severe pain on the left side of my head! It subsides after resting for a moment.
Could this be caused by water getting into my left ear?

Dr. Ji Zhaoyun reply Otolaryngology

Hello, most of the issues you mentioned are "not" caused by water entering the left ear.
The possible causes could be: 1) Eustachian tube dysfunction: This is the most common cause and can occur not only during flying, hiking, or diving, but also when forcefully blowing the nose or bending over.
2) Sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
3) Otitis media: a) Acute otitis media: Often occurs alongside upper respiratory infections (such as colds) and sinusitis; in severe cases, there may be ear discharge.
b) Chronic otitis media with acute exacerbation: Usually occurs when there is a pre-existing perforation in the eardrum, which can be aggravated by unclean water or improper ear cleaning, leading to inflammation.
4) Migraine.
5) Temporomandibular joint inflammation.
--> All of the above conditions can be appropriately managed with medication through medical consultation.
Wishing you peace and good health.

When it comes to experiencing severe left-sided headaches during weight training, it is unlikely that water in the ear is the primary cause of your symptoms. While ear-related issues can lead to discomfort, the specific nature of your headaches suggests that other factors may be at play.
There are several potential explanations for your left-sided headache during exertion:
1. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: This is a common issue where the Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the back of the throat, does not function properly. This can occur during activities that involve changes in pressure, such as heavy lifting or straining. Symptoms may include a feeling of fullness in the ear, discomfort, and sometimes headaches.

2. Muscle Tension and Strain: Weight training often involves significant muscle exertion, which can lead to tension in the neck and shoulder muscles. This tension can radiate to the head, causing headaches. If you are lifting heavy weights or using improper form, this could exacerbate muscle strain.

3. Migraine or Tension-Type Headaches: If you have a history of migraines or tension-type headaches, the physical exertion involved in weight training could trigger these headaches. Migraines can be particularly sensitive to changes in physical activity, stress, and even dehydration.

4. Cervicogenic Headaches: These headaches originate from issues in the cervical spine (neck). If you are straining your neck during weightlifting, it could lead to cervicogenic headaches, which are often unilateral (affecting one side of the head).

5. Dehydration: Not drinking enough water before and during your workout can lead to dehydration, which is a common trigger for headaches. Ensure you are adequately hydrated before engaging in strenuous physical activity.

6. Blood Pressure Fluctuations: Strenuous exercise can cause fluctuations in blood pressure, which may lead to headaches. If you have underlying hypertension or other cardiovascular issues, this could be a contributing factor.

Given that your headache resolves with rest, it suggests that it may be related to exertion rather than a chronic condition. However, if the headaches persist or worsen, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend imaging studies or other diagnostic tests to rule out any serious underlying conditions.

In summary, while water in the ear is unlikely to be the cause of your left-sided headaches during weight training, there are several other factors to consider. It would be wise to monitor your symptoms, ensure proper hydration, and pay attention to your lifting technique. If the headaches continue, seeking medical advice is recommended to identify the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.
