Penile Hardness: When to Seek Medical Advice - Urology

Penile issues

Hello, doctor.
Sometimes when I touch my penis while it's not erect, I feel it is somewhat firm (not just a small part, but the whole thing).
Sometimes it happens, and sometimes it doesn't, but it's not in a state where it's too hard to bend.
I can still bend it left and right with my hand, unlike when it's fully erect.
This usually occurs when the penis is at its shortest state.
However, if I don't touch it, I don't feel anything unusual, and there is no pain or impact on normal erections.
I did some research; does this count as abnormal penile erection? Should I seek medical examination soon? If not, could you please explain why this happens?

Hello: When the penis becomes engorged, its rigidity increases, and the degree of rigidity varies with the level of engorgement.
Based on your description, this seems to be normal.
If there are any concerns, please seek medical evaluation.
Wishing you good health.

Understanding penile hardness and its variations can often lead to confusion and concern. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing a phenomenon where your penis feels somewhat firm or "hard" even when not fully erect, but it is still flexible and can be bent. This situation can be quite common and may not necessarily indicate a medical issue.

Firstly, it's important to understand that the penis can exhibit different states of firmness due to various factors, including blood flow, temperature, and even psychological states. The penis is made up of erectile tissue, which can become engorged with blood during arousal, leading to an erection. However, even in a non-aroused state, the penis can feel firmer at times due to increased blood flow or other physiological changes.

In your case, the fact that you can still bend your penis and that it does not cause pain or discomfort is a positive sign. It suggests that the firmness you are experiencing is likely not due to any pathological condition. The firmness may be influenced by factors such as:
1. Temperature: Cold temperatures can cause the blood vessels to constrict, which may lead to a temporary change in the firmness of the penis.

2. Hormonal Fluctuations: Testosterone levels can influence the state of the penis. Variations in hormone levels throughout the day can lead to changes in firmness.

3. Physical Stimulation: Even light touching or stimulation can cause a temporary increase in blood flow to the penis, resulting in a firmer feeling.

4. Anxiety or Stress: Psychological factors can also play a role. If you are anxious or stressed, it may affect how your body responds, including the state of your penis.

However, it is essential to be aware of certain signs that would warrant medical attention. You should consider seeking medical advice if you experience any of the following:
- Pain or Discomfort: If the firmness is accompanied by pain, discomfort, or any unusual sensations, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional.

- Changes in Erection Quality: If you notice significant changes in your ability to achieve or maintain an erection, or if you experience erectile dysfunction, it is important to seek help.

- Persistent Hardness: If you experience a prolonged erection (lasting more than four hours) that is not related to sexual arousal, this could be a condition known as priapism, which requires immediate medical attention.

- Other Symptoms: If you notice any other unusual symptoms, such as swelling, discoloration, or changes in the skin of the penis, you should consult a doctor.

In conclusion, based on your description, it does not appear that you are experiencing an abnormal condition. However, if you have any concerns or if the situation changes, it is always best to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice and reassurance. Regular check-ups and open communication with your doctor about any changes in your sexual health are important for maintaining overall well-being.
