Wearing new orthokeratology lenses may cause blurred vision?
Hello, doctor.
Recently, I have been using my orthokeratology lenses for two and a half years, and my ophthalmologist recommended replacing them.
After the replacement, my vision was clearer for the first two weeks, but after about two weeks, no matter how I wore them, my vision in both eyes could not be as clear as before, with my left eye being particularly blurry.
However, I did not experience these issues with my old lenses, which I wore for a long time.
Additionally, the blurriness in my vision started around the time I stayed overnight at a high altitude location (approximately 3000 meters).
Could it be possible that the high altitude and pressure factors affected the lenses? Thank you, doctor!

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology
Hello Chris: It could be due to the lenses or there may be an issue with the cornea.
Please schedule a follow-up appointment for an examination as soon as possible.

When it comes to the use of orthokeratology lenses, or ortho-k lenses, there are several factors that can contribute to blurriness or decreased visual clarity after switching to a new pair. Here are some potential reasons and considerations based on your situation.
1. Adaptation Period
After changing to a new pair of ortho-k lenses, it is common for the eyes to go through an adaptation period. During this time, your vision may fluctuate as your cornea adjusts to the new lens shape. This adaptation can take a few days to a couple of weeks. If you experienced clearer vision initially but then noticed a decline, it could be that your eyes are still adjusting to the new lenses.
2. Lens Fit and Design
The fit of the new lenses is crucial for optimal vision correction. If the new lenses do not fit as well as the previous ones, this can lead to blurred vision. Factors such as changes in the curvature of your cornea, lens design, or even the material of the lenses can affect how well they correct your vision. It is essential to have a thorough fitting and assessment by your eye care professional to ensure that the new lenses are appropriate for your eyes.
3. Environmental Factors
You mentioned staying at a high altitude (around 3000 meters). High altitudes can affect your eyes in several ways. The lower oxygen levels and changes in atmospheric pressure can lead to dryness and discomfort, which may exacerbate any issues with your lenses. Additionally, if you were exposed to different environmental conditions, such as wind or dry air, this could also contribute to discomfort and blurred vision.
4. Lens Care and Maintenance
Proper care and maintenance of ortho-k lenses are vital for maintaining clear vision. If there was any change in your cleaning routine or if the new lenses were not cleaned properly, this could lead to deposits or debris on the lenses, causing blurred vision. Ensure that you are following the recommended cleaning and storage procedures for your lenses.
5. Underlying Eye Health Issues
Sometimes, changes in vision can be related to underlying eye health issues. If you have not had a recent comprehensive eye exam, it may be worth scheduling one to rule out any potential problems such as dry eye syndrome, corneal irregularities, or other conditions that could affect your vision.
6. Contact Lens Overwear
If you are wearing your ortho-k lenses for longer than recommended, this can lead to discomfort and blurred vision. It is essential to follow the prescribed wearing schedule to avoid complications.
Conclusion
In summary, if you are experiencing blurriness with your new ortho-k lenses, it is essential to consider the adaptation period, lens fit, environmental factors, lens care, and overall eye health. If the blurriness persists or worsens, it is advisable to consult your eye care professional for a thorough evaluation. They can assess the fit of your lenses, check for any underlying issues, and provide guidance on how to achieve the best possible vision with your ortho-k lenses. Remember, maintaining regular follow-ups with your eye care provider is crucial for ensuring the health of your eyes and the effectiveness of your vision correction.
