Missed menstruation with brown discharge?
Hello Doctor: My menstrual cycle has always been regular, starting at the beginning of each month.
However, since June of this year, I have not had my period until now in August.
I noticed some brown discharge or spotting with blood around mid-July and mid-August.
I found online that this could be ovulation bleeding, but is it possible to not have a period after ovulation? I have not had any sexual intercourse.
Could this be a case of hormonal imbalance? Do I need to see a doctor for medication? Thank you, Doctor.

More Info
Brown discharge without menstruation can be concerning, especially when it deviates from your regular menstrual cycle. The presence of brown discharge, particularly when it occurs outside of your expected menstrual period, can be attributed to several potential causes.
Firstly, brown discharge often indicates old blood that has taken longer to exit the body. This can happen at various times in the menstrual cycle, including during ovulation or at the end of a menstrual period. In your case, since you mentioned that you have not had a menstrual period since June but have experienced brown discharge in July and August, it is essential to consider other factors.
One common cause of brown discharge is hormonal imbalance. Hormonal fluctuations can lead to irregular menstrual cycles, which may result in missed periods and unusual discharge. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or other endocrine issues can disrupt the normal hormonal balance, leading to these symptoms. Given that you have not had a period for several months, it is plausible that an underlying hormonal issue could be at play.
Another possibility is that the brown discharge could be related to ovulation. Some women experience ovulation spotting, which can occur around the middle of the menstrual cycle when an egg is released from the ovary. This spotting can sometimes appear brownish due to the age of the blood. However, if you are not experiencing a regular menstrual cycle following ovulation, this may not be the sole explanation.
Additionally, brown discharge can be a sign of other conditions such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, or even infections. While you mentioned having no sexual intercourse, it is still important to consider the possibility of infections, which can lead to abnormal discharge and other symptoms.
Given the duration of your symptoms and the absence of menstruation, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, blood tests to check hormone levels, and possibly imaging studies to rule out any structural issues within the reproductive system.
In terms of treatment, if a hormonal imbalance is diagnosed, your doctor may recommend lifestyle changes, hormonal therapy, or other medications to help regulate your menstrual cycle. If an underlying condition is identified, such as endometriosis or fibroids, the treatment plan may vary accordingly.
In summary, while brown discharge can be a normal occurrence in some cases, the absence of menstruation for several months combined with this symptom warrants further investigation. It is crucial to seek medical advice to determine the underlying cause and appropriate management. Your health is important, and addressing these symptoms with a healthcare professional will provide clarity and peace of mind.
