Can I get pregnant?

My menstrual cycle is very regular, 28 days.
It started on August 2 and ended on August 8.
My boyfriend and I engaged in oral sex on August 12, which seems to be around the edge of my ovulation period.
He released pre-ejaculatory fluid, and I performed oral sex on him.
After that, it seemed to dry up a bit.
I'm really worried that even a small amount of sperm might accidentally enter my vagina.
He touched my vulva, but since I am a virgin, he couldn't penetrate my vagina and could only rub on the outside.
Is there a chance of pregnancy? I'm really scared...
Is the risk of pregnancy high?

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, based on your description, the chances of pregnancy are not very high.
However, as long as there are active sperm present in the vagina during the ovulation period, there is still a possibility of pregnancy regardless of the method.
It is advisable to take appropriate contraceptive measures, and if necessary, consult a physician for evaluation.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.

The concern about the possibility of pregnancy from oral sex and external contact is a common one, especially among individuals who are sexually active but may not fully understand the mechanics of conception. To address your question directly: the likelihood of becoming pregnant from oral sex or external genital contact is extremely low, but it is not entirely impossible under certain circumstances.

First, let's clarify how pregnancy occurs. For conception to take place, sperm must enter the vagina and travel through the cervix into the uterus, where it can fertilize an egg. This typically happens through vaginal intercourse, where ejaculation occurs inside the vagina. In your case, you mentioned that your boyfriend had some pre-ejaculatory fluid (also known as pre-cum) that may contain sperm, and that there was some external contact with your genital area.

1. Pre-ejaculatory Fluid and Sperm: Pre-ejaculatory fluid can contain sperm, but the concentration is usually much lower than in ejaculate. If this fluid comes into contact with the vaginal opening, there is a theoretical risk of sperm entering the vagina, especially if there is any movement or friction that could push the fluid inward. However, the chances of this leading to pregnancy are very low, particularly if there was no direct ejaculation inside the vagina.

2. External Contact: You mentioned that your boyfriend was unable to penetrate you due to being a virgin, and that the contact was external. This further reduces the likelihood of pregnancy. Sperm generally require a moist environment to survive, and once outside the body, they quickly lose their viability. If there was no direct ejaculation into the vagina, the risk remains minimal.

3. Timing of Ovulation: You noted that your menstrual cycle is regular and that you were near your ovulation period. While this is a time when you are most fertile, the risk of pregnancy from the activities you described is still very low. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, but again, the key factor here is whether viable sperm were introduced into the vagina.

4. Concerns About Pregnancy: It’s understandable to feel anxious about the possibility of pregnancy, especially if you are not ready for it. If you are concerned about pregnancy, consider taking a home pregnancy test if your period is late. Additionally, if you are sexually active, it may be beneficial to discuss contraceptive options with your healthcare provider to prevent unintended pregnancies in the future.

5. Sexual Health and Safety: It’s also important to consider sexually transmitted infections (STIs) when engaging in any sexual activity, including oral sex. While the risk of transmitting STIs through oral sex is lower than through vaginal or anal intercourse, it is not zero. Using barriers such as condoms or dental dams can help reduce the risk of both pregnancy and STIs.

In conclusion, while the risk of pregnancy from the activities you described is very low, it is not entirely absent. If you have further concerns or if your anxiety persists, it may be helpful to speak with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice and reassurance. Remember, understanding your body and reproductive health is key to making informed decisions about your sexual activity.
