Itchy Eyes: Causes and Allergies Explained - Ophthalmology

Why do eyes itch?

Hello, Doctor.
My son is 19 years old and has been troubled by allergies since childhood, mainly experiencing nasal congestion and runny nose, along with itchy eyes.
His nasal symptoms have improved by avoiding allergens, but he has been struggling with eye allergies as he cannot identify the triggers.
It seems that as soon as he opens his eyes, they may start itching, and rubbing them causes redness on the bridge of his nose (above the tear duct), which looks unsightly.
I would like to understand the cause of his itchy eyes, so I have a few questions for you:
1) Is my son's itchy eyes caused by inhaling allergens that lead to nasal allergies, which in turn trigger eye allergies? Or is it simply due to allergens in the air or water (he has noticed that swimming often causes eye itching) that directly affect his eyes?
2) Is there a higher likelihood that the food my son consumes could lead to systemic allergies that cause his eyes to itch?
3) Although my son has symptoms of eye allergies, he has never experienced the typical symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis, such as redness and swelling of the eyeball or surrounding areas.
The only redness he has is on the bridge of his nose due to scratching.
I would like to ask if this could still be a manifestation of eye allergies, or could it possibly not be eye allergies at all? Thank you, Doctor.

I recommend that you: 1.
Discuss the above situation further with your attending physician to determine if any additional tests are necessary.
2.
You may also consider visiting a large hospital or medical center for evaluation.
Thank you, and wish you good health!

Itchy eyes can be a frustrating and uncomfortable experience, especially for someone like your son, who has a history of allergies. Understanding the underlying causes of itchy eyes is crucial for effective management and relief. Let’s address your questions one by one.

1. Are itchy eyes caused by inhaling allergens that lead to nasal allergies?
Yes, it is quite possible that your son’s itchy eyes are related to his nasal allergies. Allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, can cause a cascade of symptoms that affect the eyes. When allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander are inhaled, they can trigger an immune response that leads to inflammation not only in the nasal passages but also in the eyes. This condition is known as allergic conjunctivitis. The release of histamines in response to allergens can cause itching, redness, and swelling in the eyes. Therefore, it’s plausible that the nasal symptoms are interconnected with the eye symptoms.

2. Can food allergies cause itchy eyes?
Food allergies can indeed lead to systemic reactions that may include itchy eyes, although this is less common than reactions to airborne allergens. If your son has a food allergy, it could potentially trigger an allergic response that manifests in various ways, including itchy eyes. However, it’s essential to note that the likelihood of food allergies causing isolated eye symptoms is lower compared to airborne allergens. If you suspect food allergies, it would be beneficial to consult with an allergist for appropriate testing and management.

3. Is the redness near the tear duct due to eye allergies?
The redness near the tear duct area, especially if it occurs after rubbing or scratching, can indeed be a manifestation of allergic reactions. While typical allergic conjunctivitis often presents with redness and swelling of the conjunctiva (the membrane covering the white part of the eye), localized redness can occur due to irritation from rubbing. The act of rubbing the eyes can exacerbate the symptoms and lead to further inflammation. It’s also possible that the redness is a result of irritation rather than a direct allergic reaction. If your son has not experienced significant swelling or redness of the eyeball itself, it may still be consistent with allergic conjunctivitis, albeit in a milder form.

Additional Considerations and Management
To manage your son’s itchy eyes effectively, consider the following strategies:
- Identify and Avoid Allergens: Keeping a diary of when the symptoms occur can help identify potential triggers. If swimming is a common activity, consider using goggles to protect his eyes from chlorine and other irritants in the water.

- Antihistamines: Over-the-counter antihistamine eye drops can provide relief from itchy eyes. Oral antihistamines may also help with overall allergy symptoms, but they can sometimes cause dryness, which may exacerbate eye discomfort.

- Cold Compresses: Applying a cold compress to the eyes can help reduce itching and swelling.

- Consult an Allergist: If symptoms persist or worsen, it may be beneficial to consult an allergist for comprehensive testing. They can help identify specific allergens and recommend appropriate treatments, which may include allergy shots (immunotherapy) for long-term relief.

- Environmental Control: Implementing measures to reduce exposure to allergens in the home, such as using air purifiers, keeping windows closed during high pollen seasons, and regularly cleaning to reduce dust mites, can also be beneficial.

In conclusion, your son’s itchy eyes are likely related to his history of allergies, and understanding the triggers can help in managing his symptoms effectively. If symptoms persist despite these measures, seeking professional medical advice is essential for further evaluation and tailored treatment options.
